I'm so behind with this season! Still not finished with qualifying and it's defo the repetition that's making me not really want to watch the remaining episodes - even though they are just an hour long. Genuinely more invested in the French season atm.

I'm actually up to date now I think. I've finished semis anyway, Vegas still to go.

People have been slating this season online but quite frankly I don't think there's much difference between this year and season 13/14 - admittedly they were both bad too!

And that's the season done.

Stage 1 was a pretty rubbish course, just like last year it no longer feels like a cohesive speed course. Ultimately this stage needs a complete shake-up but obviously that would never happen ordinarily, and especially not with 16 having been filmed straight after.

Stage 2 was actually a decent (albeit not very fresh) course, such a shame it has a side-by-side racing format. With a tight time limit on a solo course this one might have worked. New obstacle Jawbreakers was a good obstacle and fairly fast too.

Stage 3 was a tale of two halves for me. The new obstacles (all two of them!) were actually pretty good. I'd quite like to see Final Frontier on this course too because it worked well on France's Stage 3, maybe something like the Dungeon or Inverter as well. The returning obstacles felt stale - especially the Cliffhanger and Pipe Dream (which has clearly well overstayed it's welcome).

Editing and commentary were as tiring as usual, nothings really changed there.

Only other thing I remember is Jonathan Bange being a breath of fresh air amongst a field of Vegas veterans and all the teens. Defo this year's surprise package and honestly, good for him!

I stopped watching midway through semi-finals. Races were so hard to watch and them spoiling Vegas was the last straw.

I know they did that in 2019 (and I was annoyed then too), but they were already on thin ice with me this year so... bye emoticon

I can't believe this was a show I used to plan my night around as recently as four years ago - and it's much more the show that's changed than me changing!

Honestly that's fair enough.

I've never actually liked the American version much, I'm not sure why I still watch it every year and I always say so much.

I'm speaking from memory here as it's been a long time since I last watched most of the seasons but I've always found the editing horrendous or at best dull. The post-7 I want to say increase in sob stories just made things worse. Then of course the way they pushed the teens down your throats in 13. I agree I hate spoilers but almost every ninja show I've ever watched will spoil a winner beforehand. That in turn also spoils years not having winner because they don't have a "someone will win" in the advertising.

Speaking of the teens, I do think from a show perspective introducing them all at once was a mistake. Every year, you'd follow your favourites and a few new hopefuls would pop up every year that took you by surprise and you felt you got to know them. When they introduced the teens there was suddenly a huge influx of people to the extent you couldn't get to know even a fraction of them all unless you've seen them in leagues for years.

Of course it didn't help that none of them were relatable as individuals because they were schoolchildren from rich backgrounds, rather than people juggling training with a full-time job or putting their livelihoods on the line to set up a gym and follow their passion. Yes they're great ninjas who are carrying results for the most part now (mainly due to very difficult courses nowadays) but the show has lost accessibility and relatability and I think that makes for a less enjoyable watch.

And solo runs are usually more entertaining than trying to follow two people on races, provided the solo course has been designed well! The thing about racing is it has made courses what they should have been before - something fast-paced but then put a time limit on and run it solo. This adds tension as speed forces mistakes and fits more runs into the show, giving it a faster pace overall. But it seems they think racing has gone well in other countries? Apparently they cited Australia - where it literally killed the show - as an example of racing working in other countries!

Exactly!!

Your point about the winner spoilers effectively spoiling every season is so true. Same with TCT always spoiling their winners - and if they spoiled a winner for the third episode after already having winners the first two episodes, you just KNOW they couldn’t help but spoil a winner after a 60+ episode drought (since there were no winners after episode 20).

Anyway back to ninja (see, I’m so bored of ANW that I can’t even stay on topic emoticon). But agreed with you about the teens. I’ve always felt like I was unfairly “bitter” when I said the teens are only so good because they are kids and have nothing else to do and privileged enough to go to these huge gyms every day, but it’s true! There were a couple kids this year (like that boy with a younger brother who had some disability and he helped him train with him) that I liked, but most just seem too “me, me, me” for my liking. Also, it’s not their fault but the whole “teen invasion” theme annoyed me.

Seen that with other formats too. A country will shake things up with the fans not liking it and the show subsequently getting axed yet other versions still take on the twist - and usually with the same (lack of) success.

In terms of Ninja Warrior it's one thing messing with the qualification stages but quite another messing with the finals. I get the idea of having a head to head stage to have a bit of variation to the format but ultimately the finals should always be against the course, not each other.

Oh absolutely, the AuNW6 head-to-head semis were in fairness much more entertaining than 5's pretty dire solo ones - although that was definitely to do with the course. The racing had no place in Stage 1 of finals and felt weird - almost as if the round was a bit of an afterthought (which it probably was).

ANW it's hard to make comparisons because it almost always gets Stage 2 wrong anyway but it was defo weird having people advance to the next stage without completing the previous course. I just wish we saw more of the kinds of courses we get from head to head racing but for solo runs with a tight enough time limit.

This season SUCKEDDDD.

The races in the finals were so bad, stage 3 was too easy and so dull, too many annoying teenagers screaming "LETS GOOOO", every single person is a brand "The ___ Ninja", it's so far removed from the original now.

Yeah, they lost me at semi-finals.

It’s been faaaar from Sasuke for awhile, but even after it lost that spirit, I still loved the show in its own right till 2020. Then they went all budget-cut and stopped traveling for good and everything just blurred together and felt lame.

The gimmicks to the few newer seasons have been lame, the audience is much smaller, MOST of the teens have kind of annoyed me (ugh, now I can’t even justify that comment by saying “Don’t take offense, I’m a teen myself” emoticon ) and the energy has just felt off. I can’t tell if theres anything else that’s changed, but the show has just felt “off” the past few years.

Filming two seasons together and having all the racing (even in Vegas) was the final nail in the coffin.
