Wipeout Community Obstacle Ranking

This is a ranking series some of my friends are holding that I am promoting here. This will be split into different forms, and I will be posting the new forms and the results of them here once they're out. Discussion is encouraged, so you can do so in this thread, or in our Discord server if you have an account!

Sounds like fun!! Reminds me of what used to happen on here when Wipeout was still on the air and well before I joined. As always with making a list like this, I had no idea what would top it and what I would say is worst, but I came up with…

Best

1. Spinner - I probably wouldn’t expect to call it my FAVORITE obstacle, but it was such a formidable test, especially considering this was the early days. It was simple and elegant, yet so challenging to get on and off of.

2. Sinistairs - I just think it’s a cool concept and again it just looks good and is enjoyable to watch. The structure allowed for very brutal hits and exciting recoveries.

3. Spinergy - So apparently I like obstacles beginning with S. For me this obstacle was a diamond in the rough of season 5 Wipeout Zones and it just gave that sense of scale to the Zone. It also messed up a lot of runs.

4. Crazy Sweeper - Similarly to the Spinner, this obstacle just felt really classic, and I think they did well at replacing the Spinner with an different obstacle that still feels “important”. Surprised it’s taken this long to get to an obstacle with consistent variations too!

5. Block Buster - I really didn’t expect this one to crack the top five - it was a toss-up between this one and some others from season 6, but I think it’s good. They’ve been uploading lots from this block on Facebook recently and I was reminded that, time penalty aside (which was annoying and I’m not considering it in this opinion piece!), it’s a really good one. The tipping of the wall, the tipping of the blocks, big leaps and perilous landings. It was an example of a really good controlled Zone obstacle.

I know a lot of those reasons were vague but it’s hard for me to just describe why I like something. But there you go.

On the negative side…

Worst

1. Iced Over - Again, I don’t immediately look at this and say “It’s the worst idea ever OMG”, but it’s relatively dull to me. The diamonds are apparently scheduled to line up differently every rotation which is a cool enough idea, but it seems like a lot of people made it because the platforms happened to be straight at the same time or missed it because the platform they were jumping to just happened to be way too high. The only real thing it has going for it was being at the end so often being an exciting part due to the close competition. But aside from that, bleh.

2. Barrel Run - Okay, this should probably even be top spot but I went a bit easier on it for being such a new show at the time. It didn’t cause too many wipeouts (though it did cause surprisingly many for some, I thought) and was often cleared quickly and uneventfully. The original Triple Threat may have been a better idea to keep there, but at the end of the day I’m still glad we had Barrel Run just cause it’s what we know.

3. Coin Toss - Again, being the final obstacle it had some pretty exciting finishes, but it was just a bit too linear and small. It also seemed to consistently get people tripping at the start on the first try and then striding across them easily the next.

4. Raging Rapids - The obstacle was unique in how it was water-based but was often very repetitive to me. The few competitors who survived it were exciting to see, but otherwise not so much. It brought a sort of wow factor to the course and I liked its look, but it didn’t make for good wipeouts and you could really only have a maximum of one fall each.

5. The Torrential Twisters are another obstacle that should’ve been cool, but just felt lame when they were added. I think going from the constantly modified Turntables in season 2 that ended a lot of runs to these ones that were never modified was a letdown, not to mention it was not very major for a third obstacle and I think there were some episodes where it went unfailed. The rain looked cool, but still.

I may have forgotten about the new seasons when I did my least favorites. Unfortunate because it wouldn’t have mattered if I forgot during favorites, but I probably had some new series obstacles to add to my least faves. Although realistically it probably would’ve just been G-Force added in as second or third worst (the new Point Break not far from placing, but a bit too good I think).

As I said, I’m really bad at coming up with favorites and least favorites of anything and I feel like my list would change somewhat depending on the day lol. But I’m fairly comfortable with this list.

I ordered the worst five on here the opposite way to the form, but don’t worry - I did it correctly on your sheet. I just thought it’d make easier reading on here emoticon
