Episode 13: NOW That’s What I Call Wipeout

As usual only a description of the contestants which doesn’t inspire much confidence for variation. But apparently this episode will have us saying “oh deer” - Takeshi’s Castle crossover anyone? emoticon

This topic is mainly so I can know if it’s really just going to be Hoop Hopper every time. Typical that my university doesn’t have cable and the website wants me to sign in using my (or my family’s, but it’s too complicated) cable provider emoticon

This episode was the 17th filmed so if it's Hoop Hopper I've lost all hope.

They obviously think now putting clips and previews out in advance would put people off watching rather than encourage them to tune in.

The social media strategy sucks - ABC did it far better way back in the very early days of social media over the first few series - certainly for the second series previews were easily available, though it might have been via the official website rather than through third party sites. Never understood the logic in broadcasters sending viewers (and therefore advertisers) away from their own sites to promote rival digital platforms.

The Spin Cycle has to be one of the worst starters ever. How to you take an obstacle that was practically universally loved and make it so awful? Other than that, this was a good episode.

Yeah, I agree on the basis of wanting to go back to the time before social media dominated everything (despite how much I use it...), and I definitely think they should have a more unique and up-to-date website, but I'm afraid these days they might get more attention from using social media (even if it means bringing people away from the website). Still, I 100% agree that there SHOULD be more websites for these shows and that their strategy is awful.

My thoughts on the first five minutes available on the TBS site:

They changed the intro! Well, the main thing is getting rid of the "This is wild... No, this is Wipeout" bit. Though I went back to the other two newer eps to see if it had been changed there and it seems that they always change the intro a bit each week emoticon It never sounds that exciting though. I wish they'd go to the old intro - or something to a similar point where it's not so disorganized.

The opening segment actually made me laugh! It took 13 weeks for me to LOL at something. I mean, I've smiled before at comments but this is a first. It wasn't even that funny, though the teleprompter thing felt a bit more like an original Wipeout series skit. Speaking of teleprompters, end of quote. emoticon

The Wallop Wall is an obstacle I should really dislike as it's made up of three smackthings. I'm not saying I love it, but I applaud it for being the least copycat of all the starters so far. Plus, putting a ledge to hold onto makes it a tiny bit fairer than a simple smackwall and also differentiates it. Still, it will bore me to see it again this episode, much less four more times. I assume that thing in the middle is like a Driver's Ed brake? Was it used this episode or maybe it's being saved for another week as some attempt at variation?

Only had a tiny glimpse of the Spin Cycle (WHY COPY NAMES OF OTHER UNRELATED OBSTACLES?), but yeah that was dumb. I really hope they do turn it around for the next two episodes at least, but doubt it. I feel like it was going clockwise in one of the trailers though (back when I thought it was a Sinister Snowflake remake)? Was the bubble bath used at all? I couldn't tell, but maybe that's also a "twist" (or I just missed it). Was the obstacle shown only like once or twice. The obstacle in that spot tends to be and in this case, rightfully so.

So you can go under arms on the Body Blender. How stupid. They should either make you jump off or penalize you 30 seconds (if they'd rather not encourage people to simply jump into the water). So is the wedge permanently on the Jiggleator now as that's it's final form?

Most of these questions are rhetorical, but feel free to answer too. It's weird not being able to watch a show like this like I'm used to!

TBS at least now putting up clips of the episode, though after they air rather than as a teaser. Still that's all you need to see to get the idea of it.

Yet again as with the first block had these two part openers just been double upped to make four rather than two openers across the 10 episodes things would be much better - though not sure the Rumble Bridges or Spin Cycle are quite good enough to be obstacles in their own right, but could be with a bit of modification. Indeed always thought the Rumble Bridges would be good after the Big Balls as a regular obstacle, with a larger gap between the bridges and then an obstacle that changes in between them.

Spin Cycle was pretty decent in it's early incarnations as the Pitchfork Tumbler, Snowblowers and Lawn Mowers but feels lazy here. It needs modifying in a way that makes it feel new.

Agreed that these obstacles aren’t great on their own. Though if it was only one (or even two) weeks of each it’d be so much less of an issue! The faces on the Spin Cycle are meant to add some interest value, but they don’t really play on them and it just comes across as lazy. Plus, I’m a bit surprised they’d put their faces on an obstacle just because it sort of prevents other countries from ever buying these ones and putting their own hosts in it. Though maybe that isn’t really on the table with this show anyway!

Thanks for the clips, I watched those. Even though it barely changes, I find the Qualifier so much more watchable than the other two rounds that don’t have any changes and are frankly just stale. They were absent from the Suicide Squad one, so I’m sorry to see they brought the chucklef—k story packages back. Those take up so much time that could be devoted to the course and they also make Camille redundant.

I did notice instead of the foam they sprayed people in the Spin Cycle. So there’s something that will change a bit. Unless I completely made up that there ever was foam in the trailer emoticon The Big Balls attempt was interesting. Obviously the backflip was intentional once he lost balance but the whole effort just felt different. That was good!

To be honest I don't mind the packages too much. They're generally done in a fun way and not a Total Washout "I'm taking this so seriously but here I am awkwardly trying to be funny" way. Yes, they could use Camille more instead but at least they tried one thing different.

I agree that they could be worse, but I just don’t think they’re that good. And I just considered that Camille isn’t even present in the Zone so she is made so redundant in this remake emoticon I really the the packages feel a bit ordinary for Wipeout. Not that having a host interview contestants is groundbreaking either, but that feels less generic than these packages - to me anyway. They look cheap to me too.

But I will give the remake a tiny bit of credit (although it’s still dumb that they do it). I’ve always complained about the new version reusing the intro audio clips each time. And I still do. But thinking back, I think that was occasionally done in the original show, at least in some later rounds. I was just thinking today if the Johns’ line in the Zone “The Crankshaft winds it up, followed by the Blades of Fury and then the brutal Beater Totter to the finish platform” (or something like that). Now I remember an embarrassing amount about Wipeout, but I know that line was used more than once as I very much associate it with that Gauntlet as a whole. Same with the Playset Sweepers “as they rotate at alarming speeds”. I know there was a time or two where they said a different adjective than “alarming”, but anyway I just thought it was interesting as I hadn’t considered since the remake came out that some of the original lines were reused.

I think I was mainly just thinking of how the Qualifier was fresh every week - though that’s probably down to the fact that even the obstacles that weren’t changed properly still had different themes each week, by and large. Still, the original show didn’t do this EVERY week at any point and, when it was done, it was done better!

Camille misses the next episode as she was off sick. I doubt it'll be noticed much, but be interesting to see how they handle it - presumably with a running gag. Suspect in the original run Henson would have stepped in with a running gag of him running up and down to the studio.
