Is it possible Jay went last?
Second last, they ran them in order of Stage 3 clear times. Interestingly each competitor got higher up than the previous one. Something I forgot to mention was they edited it so that once they timed up the clock kept going as they tried to get the fastest fail time for $100K. That suggested from the very first fail that all five were likely failing.

I find the I bigger issue though is keeping Pipe Dream - that's the kind of obstacle I'd consider a one-off AND definitely something to remove after a victory. But evidently it's not in their mind!
I think they keep it because it still takes people out, admittedly I'm not it's biggest fan either and feel it's more of a one-off thing. I'd have liked Curved Body Prop to have got a longer run.

Also, have we never had a Stage Three clear with eight obstacles?
Season 7 had 8 obstacles but yeah the others have had 7 obstacles! I'm not too bothered about the obstacle count, I just want a changed structure, there are so many good upper-body obstacles from over the years (mainly stuck in the regionals) but they always rely on the same dated bunch from Stage 3 with a couple new one-offs. The secret with keeping this stage difficult is definitely giving it an overhaul every year as it's arguably the easiest stage to train for in a ninja gym (upper body, doesn't require enormous space).

Re: ANW 14
Very interesting that they got consistently higher. You mean in the original order or in the showing - or was the order kept the same? And yes, that is a giveaway of what will happen, much like their focus on the clock in season 10 where they both failed ten Cliffhanger.
Re: Pipe Dream it just takes up so much space of the stage, especially if there’s only going to be seven obstacles. Not to harp on the number too much, it’s just that having one lsss to begin with leaves less room for softball obstacles, in my mind. The lache to wall is certainly not necessary - if they have to keep it I’d take that out and just have the bars and have it go immediately into the next obstacle. Having two or three obstacles in a row is a type of format change I’d go for right about now. But that’s honestly pretty un-“modern day ANW”.
So I was thinking the other night about which Begas obstacles have been the most used and it made me thinking of creating a “Most Frequent” course, so im going to do that now. I allowed certain similar things to be lumped together (for instance: different lache obstacles on the final obstacle of Stage One because otherwise the original rope to net would be the most common, which does seem appropriate. If it was a tie for which obstacle was most used in a slot, I just picked which one I felt had a bigger impact. Sooo….
Stage One:
Snake Run
Propeller Bar
Double Dipper
Jumping Spider
Tire Run
Warped Wall
Spinning Bridge
Flying Squirrel
Stage Two:
Rope Jungle
Double Salmon Ladder
Unstable Bridge
Butterfly Wall
Metal Spin
Wall Lift
Stage Three:
Grip & Tip
Doorknob Grasper
Floating Boards
Cliffhanger with some kind of flips
Curved Body Prop
Hang Climb
Spider Flip
Flying Bar
Stage Four:
Not sure, there’s been too many versions to count
—
We’ll, what that illustrates is that o guess the obstacles are at least changing more now overall as the majority of obstacles that were used most are from the early Vegas days. I think also they’re being replaced more evenly now than they used to be - where for awhile it was just ten earlier obstacles in each stage being altered, now most slots are changed every few years. I think this is good, but on drawback is that Total Victories don’t seem to affect the course as much anymore as the amount of change tends to be about the same.
I’m bored, so I’ll also make an ideal progression to the current Vegas course. Yes, a lot of this is unrealistic as it involves Sasuke obstacles or backtracking to a previous obstacle which they don’t tend to do:
Stage One:
Hill Jump (yes)
Swinging Blades
Double Dipper
Jumping Spider with gaps in the Spider Walk portions
Tether all
Warped Wall
Breadsticks (basically one of the hanging balance obstacles, but with rectangles - this was seen at an NNL competition fairly recently. This also is contingent no hanging balance in Qualfiers )
Trapeze Launch (just a giant trapeze swing to launch yourself to the net, maybe a 10 feet gap) - High Road remains as even though both options are pretty fast, High Road may still be safer and feel a bit quicker
Stage Two:
Giant Walk the Plank
-immediately into-
Down Up Salmon Ladder
Snapback
Balance Tank
Metal Spin
Wall Lift
Stage Three:
Roulette Cylinder
-immediately into-
Pegboard (just a maybe 15 foot straight pegboard to cross, pretty grippy pegs too)
Devil Steps
Ultimate Cliffhanger (actually narrow ledges & REALLY emphasize this to sell the obstacle as still being hard - I know they would never do this. I’m just sick of the jumps now.)
Curved Body Prop
-immediately into-
Stalactites
Cane Climber (you know the downhill portion of the regional Cane Lane with those hurtles? It’s that, followed by an uphill segment of the same exact thing, climb up using the hurtles)
Pipe Slider (big dismount)
Stage Four:
Second Sasuke version with Spider Climb and Rope Climb
—
I’m not saying that’s harder than what we hand now (except Stage Three), but I feel like this would feel like a better measure of well-roundedness and I would enjoy watching for sure.
