Re: Wipeout USA on E4 in the UK - Sundays 7pm

For anyone else in the UK series 7 episodes begin next week on 4Music (Tuesday I think). Yes, it was crap compared to what came before but as it's the only series I've not seen in full and isn't as easy to find online as the others I'm quite intrigued to see it.

Even though the zone rule was awful, season 7 is still really good imo. It has some of the best courses and I liked some of the episode gimmicks.

I do think it'll probably stand up a lot more now thant it did then. Alongside the zone changes I remember the change in the tone in the commentary, especially in the qualifier, being quite jarring at the time. Again though all these years on it'll just be nice to have the two Johns back.

The new middle rounds were good though. Space Race is one of my favourite rounds from later seasons and the Yellow Purple People Beater thing was pretty decent too. The weak link was the Sweeper - not because it's a crap round but because the design used was so ugly!

Re: Wipeout USA on E4 in the UK - Sundays 7pm

So these have now begun. Started recording from Monday which was the last scheduled episode of season 6, which turned out to be the first half of the Blind Date episode. Oddly didn't show the second half.

And moving on to season 7, which begins with the Family Edition premiere split over two episdoes. God, we may not look back too fondly on season 7 but it's the most enjoyable episode I've watched in years. I'd accepted the Johns had moved on from Wipeout and Wipeout had moved on from the Johns but this just proved even as the show headed towards it's end they were absolutely peerless when it comes to hosting such shows. They do it in such an effortless manner too.

What stands out here is how strong the obstacles are - I'm only one episode in so am not judging the opening obstacles (of which I know there were fewer) or the variation or lack of, but the regular obstacles are all so much stronger than anything TBS had to offer with the Playpound and Dino Dash final obstacle. More so though the editing and the commentary just makes it all flow so much better.

Where it begins to fall apart slightly is the first score board with the focus being much more on performance than personality. It just feels so out of place and a bit too serious for the show, but isn't quite the issue throughout the show I recalled it being in the first episode at least.

Space Race, the ridiculously long named Fun Slides Yellow Purple People Beater (or something like that) and even the basic Classic Sweeper are all really strong obstacles which kind of backed up my memory of the obstacles in season 7 being pretty strong. All really enjoyable - on the first outing at least.

Of course as we all know where it falls down is with the Wipeout Zone. I think it is actually one of the best zones in the shows history, but the jumping rule just ruins it. And also back to the commentary issue the intro of contestants is now more of a performance review from Jill, which really doesn't fit in with the previously light hearted tone of the show at all.

Overall though I'm glad I finally have the opportunity to watch - I quickly gave up on season 7 at the time and when I went to go back to it the episodes weren't easily available, both through unofficial sources and when multiple seasons were added to Amazon Prime and Roku. It does sadly highlight what an inferior product the TBS show is, and perhaps benefits from me watching season 7 as a standalone series rather than having watched the others immediately prior. But it's nice to have a classic series which I've largely not seen to watch over the next couple of weeks.

Yeah, even though I remember season 7 in an unfavorable light, it wasn't too bad at all. In fact, I'd confidently say that the drop from the glory days (seasons 2 and 3) to 7 was less than the drop from 7 to where we are now. The show still worked.

Must say I'm glad I chose to watch these having skipped most the season at the time. It really was a much better season than I remember - still so stupid they changed the Wipeout Zone rules but in the context of having seen the TBS episodes I'm a bit more forgiving. I get the logic it rewards progression on the obstacle rather than punishing those who get closest to completing an obstacle with the longest swim back but it removes the factor of a fall being an equaliser which can really cause an upset, meaning the zone is all too predictable.

Just a shame they didn't have a couple more opening qualifier obstacles, even if repeats from previous seasons, but they did a good job of redressing the water ones especially.
