Holey Moley

Saw this coming up and thought it would be of interest to people on this board, surprised it doesn't already have a thread.

Starting on the 20th of June on ABC, Holey Moley looks to be a hybrid of Wipeout and Mini Golf. Filmed on the same location as Wipeout in California although doesn't appear to have any other connection regarding the production.

Promo here:

I officially can't wait for this. Thanks for sharing!

Wonder what this means for Beastmaster, though Sable Ranch is evidently a big set.

I hadn't considered that, I can't imagine they would leave the Beastmaster set built when they're not filming, it's probably cheaper to hire it all in for the short period of filming than it would be to buy it all outright and store it/maintain it year round.

The Beast Master set was massive - cheapest place to store it would have been in place. I can't see really the benefit to Netflix of ordering anymore Beastmaster now - I've certainly not got past the early stages of series 2 and think it's already done it's job of getting some "local" content into various markets by having the different hosts.

This is very much in the Wipeout style with added balls, so should be interesting. At the very least it might pave the way for a Wipeout revival - do feel like that's a question of when, not if.

It was massive, but 95% of it was standard scaffolding/trusses that any scaffolding company or company that does big lighting rigs for instance would have available for hire anyway, the only Beastmaster specific bits were the obstacles themselves(not what the obstacles were attached to) and a few of the set pieces, a lot of the larger ones of which looked inflatable to my eye.

Never really felt that Wipeout would benefit from added golf, and not sure it did really, but the production of this has Wipeout stamped all over it - hosted by a ESPN commentator and comedian, with a female reporter on the course, and of course it being on the Wipeout course as well, although only seems to use the qualifier and Sweeper pools, plus the space in front of them for non-pool based obstacles.

It's an OK hour of TV - perhaps takes itself a little too seriously. Only really watched it as a Wipeout fan to see what they'd done with the course, and the Log Roll round kind of left me wondering why Wipeout had never done a supersized Barrel Roll obstacle of their own (could probably have been a Round 3).

Format is basically 6 head to heads on different courses, with the winners progressing to three head to heads, again on different courses, and then a final 3 on Mount Wipeout, which is basically put the ball into a hole then zipline onto a crash mat and make your way to the green. Looks like the courses will essentially be the same week after week, though they didn't show every round in full so can alternate what they focus on.

I fiiiinally watched the first episode.

It's a pretty good show, but (while possibly good for allowing more variety) it feels stupid that so much time is spent talking about the windmills and then the candy course is cut completely. But yeah, hopefully they use this to their advantage and alternate which rounds not to show. I have a feeling the small hole where the loser is dropped will not frequently be seen.

I feel like I could predict something close to the order these were built, based-on the thought given to them. I feel the windmills, polar bear and candy ones were built first, and the rest probably at half-budget. The final round isn't bad, but doesn't seem too amazing.

The commentary is pretty good and had some silly moments. Then there was the woman who was crying over missing the shot emoticon

Also, did anyone fall in the water? You would think they might start with an episode where a few people fell at least.
