Re: Video Games

A couple of years ago, I started playing The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past. I had gotten pretty far into the game, and had acquired most if not all of the items. I went to play it again a couple of days ago, and I have no idea what to do.

I guess I have to start over.

My record for longest clear is...uh...13 years? Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. I haven't actually cleared Sonic 2 yet (too many painful losses on Metal Sonic to count), I think I'm coming up to 20 years on that one.

For games I actually play and am good at, I've been playing racing games since 1994 (Super Monaco GP on the MD, naturally), and music games since 2001 (I'm really quite good at this sort of thing.)

I've hardly ever returned to a game I left unfinished. (I rarely leave a game unfinished, I always find some way to cheat.)

But there are few I had 20-25 years ago on Master System and then have finished with emulator (cheating with save) along last 10-15 years: Sonic 1, Fantasy Zone, Afterburner, The Ninja, Dragon Crystal

Re: Video Games

Sonic the Hedgehog for the Master System is pretty rare here in the US. The PAL version is a lot more common. Thankfully, the Master System is region free, so I could buy European games for cheaper.

But the Master System didn't really do anything over here, because of two things:

1. Nintendo released the NES here about two years before, and didn't market it as a video game console.

2. Sega had Tonka distribute the SMS here, and they didn't know how to market it, so they marketed it as a video game system. If you know anything about the North American video game crash of 1983/1984, video game was basically a bad word for retail stores.

It did good in Europe because there wasn't a video game market crash, and Nintendo didn't release a PAL version of the NES until 1987.

The best market for the Master System is Brazil, where the same company that had the distribution rights in the country (Tec Toy) still manufactures the console, and they made their own games and ported games that weren't available in any other region.

Ironically, Sega never had a big popularity in Japan, though (I think) their arcade games were popular. The only system that ever really put a dent in the Famicom's market in Japan was the PC Engine (Turbografx-16).

I'm glad I eventually bought a Master System, though I only have Fantasy Zone (great game), Shinobi (even better game), OutRun (great game, and a decent port), and Double Dragon (closer to the arcade version, but it flickers a lot). The system has Hang-On built in.

I was a huge Sonic The Hedgehog fan, until the disastrous Shadow the Hedgehog.
I've beaten
Sonic the Hedgehog 1
Sonic 2
Sonic 3
Sonic 3d Blast
Sonic Adventure one
Sonic Heroes

I can't beat the final level in Sonic and Knuckles (Everyone says it's easy but It's too darn hard for me.), The final Level in Sonic Adventure 2 and any of the Sonic Game Gear games.

I really don't have many video game systems. Haven't really seen the need to buy any of the recent systems. Although I might get a 3ds so I can play Professor Layton.

I have DD, I really regret I traded FZ away back when. I love Hang-On, it obviously being one of my first games, great playability.

You do know about Snail Maze? The "hidden" game of Master System?
I'm pretty sure a version with Hang-On should have it. (My own MS is Hang-On/Safari Hunt version with Light Phaser.)
Hold 1, 2 and UP (or left, I always forget) during the Sega logo, before it loads Hang-On and you get a little labyrinth game.

My console has it, but I know that some of them don't.

Believe it or not, Snail Maze can be intense. There's not a lot of time to get to the end, and it's challenging. I only got through about 2 of the mazes.

Fantasy Zone is a good port, but in my opinion the port on the Japan-only X68000 computer is the best, mainly because it's arcade perfect. Capcom used the X68000 to develop arcade games on it's CP(S) System board, like Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Street Fighter II.

When I got MS, all I had was one game - The Ninja - and the build-in ones. So I played the hell out of those, including Snail Maze.
I can still finish it with 2-3 tries, any day. I do it every year when I dig the console out for christmas. The last 12th maze is most simple and yet most vicious.

I had Ghouls'n Ghosts, the MS version is reasonably playable - as much as any version of that sadistic monstrosity is.
