Re: Season 2 Episode 2 17th May

Just running through. I’m very happy about the two new games, but I looked at the guide and… what? How the hell are they doing Snow Lane & Roll the Dice? Is it a couples episode?

I never thought I’d say this, but I kind of hope they slow down on new games if they’re just churning out whatever with seemingly no reason. Yeah I should prob actually watch first (or try to find a clip), but just seems weird.

Can you explain F2 Kubik?

EDIT: I just watched the available clips in full. Big Bird seems to be pretty wel-made (I’m sure General Jonnie is thrilled emoticon). The bigger drop to the nest seems unnecessary since they have the area where the zipline ends that they could put the nest on, but maybe that’d be too easy. Seems like it needs a “punishment” since there’s no falling in the water - the steam was never the best, but it’d make that part feel less empty.

Single Roller is fine too. Though it’s weird how the first contestant almost cleared the game that’s supposed to be one of the hardest. Clearly easier here with a slower-moving and wider roller, though this track does have two downward portions so I’m not saying it’d be too easy.

Also (assuming we’re not being punked by F2 Kubik emoticon), good to see this week break the trend of having either Dominoes or Home Run. Actually, hmm, that seems unlikely since it’s always been that way, now I’m trusting that part of the episode guide less and less emoticon

Still want more details, really wish I could see these episodes for myself emoticon

Alright, episode number 15 of Takeshi's Castle is out so let's see if anything new has been introduced:

Mudskippers: Although there were only 81 survivors moving on from this round, the slowest contestant ever was still lucky enough to grab a banner and win, despite it looking like he was well and truly left behind from everyone else. emoticon

Big Bird: The owl/bird costume looks nice but this game played over water makes it feel different compared to Japan, where it was played over dry land but at least they've retained the steam blowing punishment, although in my point of view it looks invisible. emoticon And I'm not complaining about balls not being fired at the players either, since dropping the rabbit in the nest floating on water from high up is already difficult enough, though it would shake things up a bit. Funny how one of the losers not only dropped the rabbit in the ponds but knocked one of the eggs out as well. emoticon

Honeycomb Maze: The new floor design looked cool and I also liked how one of the demons was dressed in a more terrifying costume as a ghost, but I still think that adding a third guard inside the labyrinth would make the game a lot more entertaining to watch. emoticon The contestant from the first round who tried hard to prevent his shirt from getting muddy was very lucky to escape at the final moment though. emoticon

Skittles: Still unfair how the contestants now have to face three bowls but this time, the guard knocked down more contestants and had better aims than last time.

Single Roller: I've always wanted this game to return and I'm finally happy it did, since it's in my Top 20 purely because of how I personally found it to be one of the toughest challenges to win at on this show and it's second appearance on the original proved that with zero success. It's amazing though how the winner was able to get across by rolling backwards on the elevated half of the track, as I thought that was impossible! emoticon Didn't like how he celebrated by getting wet though. emoticon

Take it Snow: Who would've thought this game would ever appear?! emoticon This is a challenge we would only ever see in snow specials and there definitely isn't any snow to see here. I understand Turtle Hurtle because that's played on water but this game in Saudi Arabia just feels to me like a hybrid between Skipping Stones and Blueberry Hill, due to how the steps resemble the berries or even the face of producer Kunihiko Katsura. And unlike Japan, all the fixed berries still wobbled pretty much like Skipping Stones in Thailand. emoticon The winner also looked like he spent two minutes trying to get across at the slowest pace I've ever seen and it's funny how the ending platform was shaped in the form of a blue car. emoticon

Roll the Dice: Like the previous game, none of us expected Roll the Dice to come back as well, since this was only featured once in a couples' special and there definitely aren't any women to see here in Saudi Arabia. emoticon And we still don't know who wins or loses as the contestants speak foreign language to decide if they want to roll for an odd or even number, but at least the sum appears on screen when the dice are rolled. I also like how the game setup looks very identical to the original version, despite the challenge being played at night. emoticon

Final Fall: Again, great to see more people choosing correctly than falling into the demon's trap.

Show Down: With seven contestants, it looked like a great chance of a win finally happening, but they were still blown to bits very quickly. emoticon

I was also quite shocked when I realized that more than half of the games this week were new and I'm always excited about that but it certainly feels too much for me at this rate, especially because a couple of games like Take it Snow and Roll the Dice aren't even from regular episodes of the show. I would jump for joy if Gauntlet ever returned but I don't think it's likely at this rate, given the large amount of space and also the expensive budget of how incredibly long this challenge is. emoticon The news report did say that Saudi Arabia would host 50 games and as of this week's episode, there seem to be over thirty now, so maybe they will reach that total at some point, who knows. And Messup434, I think you're confusing Snow Lane with Take it Snow as the contestants played this game individually and it looks nothing like the former. emoticon

I'm also definitely not joking around about Roll the Dice and Take it Snow being hosted in this episode and I only just realised that trivia you wrote about the location featuring Dominoes / Home Run being absent for the first time in Saudi Arabia which was indeed great to find out about that happening. My interesting trivia is to wait for the Honeycomb Maze to not appear in an odd numbered episode, since that's currently happened every time and also now shares the same sequence pattern with the Run Way, if you know what I'm saying.

Had a feeling that would be the theme. I guess it’s only right we name the SA version Angry Producers due to the lack of snow?! (like Mushroom Trip being Palm Tree Trip.)

A Gauntlet would be amazing but I agree with you on lack of space. But if Amazon Prime’s recruitment video is anything to go by, we may have the Gauntlet in the main show revival emoticon

I’m enjoying the writeups F2 Kubik, thank you! Agreed about the contestant jumping in after winning Single Roller too - I think part of me still wants them to follow the original storyline of the games being actual means of getting to the castle, as unrealistic as that is in this bare desert.

And yes I completely confused Snow Lane Take it Snow emoticon The latter makes a lot more sense and is a decent idea as it can be customized to not have the snow element. Does seem a bit redundant having this and then occasionally also having Skipping Stones, but not too bad.

I agree the Gauntlet seems unlikely here, but as this rate I wouldn’t be shocked either. Though I reckon if it does appear it’ll look pretty different.

I messaged all the new game clips to Dan and he made a great point (hope he doesn’t mind me sharing…):

With every remake it always feels like they've removed the soul of the show, because the games are all too cleanly made. Like wrapped in plastic of blocks of colour rather than painted! And no punishment at the end of Big Bird for failing!

Thought this was a good point and kind of put words to what has been in the back of my mind for awhile now. I mean I’m really glad they have a remake, but it doesn’t feel the same at all. I really hope the Japanese remake attempts to recreate the original vibe more.
