posticon S9 IS NEXT WEEK

Even though we are in Season 8, a S9 episode is scheduled for next week (205). Here is a promo with new obstacles and wipeouts!!!
Not sure if it was mentioned, but Overdrive and Dizzy Dummy are on the gauntlet.

Re: S9 IS NEXT WEEK

Argh, I was excited when I opened this. I even thought I was going to be rarely positive on this new show as I was optimistic that this new course would at least have some interesting obstacles.

..I was a bit off on that one. All but one clip (which was Overdrive from a crappy angle) is showing someone being flipped, dropped or surprised at the last second by some kind of Rumble Bridge mechanic. Oh sorry, there's also the chance that a sledgehammer hits you as you run past on the one thing. Credit where credit is due for doing something different - oh wait.

And then the one rumble bridge is literally the same starter we're going to see five times with a couple of ladder rungs added as a REGULAR OBSTACLE emoticon No chance of variation with that either. I don't know why I believed they'd come up with some original obstacles, but I was sure wrong. I guess it's partly because last time they had some half decent ideas (many were rehashes but still). Yes, the Zone looks like a slight improvement, but this Qualifier is highly disappointing to me. At least considering that these obstacles we've seen are almost guaranteed not to change based on what we've seen.

I've rewatched it. Okay, maybe it only shows three bad obstacles (at least two of which are starters). Maaaaybe the stuff they haven't advertised isn't crap, but that would mean the ad is crap. Even if everything else is a smackwall, why advertise the same several (almost the same) things instead of showing a little of everything? It doesn't bode well.

This must be the most disappointing trailer in Wipeout history. After almost a year on the one course, we're thrilled for a different one (and yeah, mixing it in was probably a wise decision), but here it is and it's arguably worse from what these "highlights" show. At least even in the dark ages of season 7 the obstacles looked original. Even in the last block - repetition-wise it was horrible but the individual obstacles were different. Here not so much.

And calm emoticon Sorry if no one else shares my level of disappointment, but for some reason I was expecting this to be a decent improvement on the previous one. Yes, having Dizzy Dummy and Overdrive is good. I'm glad to hear that.

..Did I scare him off? emoticon Welcome to Keshi Heads Braden and hope you stick around. I'm not usually (so) negative I promise emoticon

I think by now I'm prepared to be underwhelemd and disappointed.

Splitting the season and now mixing in new episodes is really messing up the season numbers too. Is this season 9, the second half of season 8, back to season 2 or what?

We had a survey from TBS, and it had descriptions of lots of the S9 obstacles. The one with Nicole's face is called "Facetime With Nicole" and yes that hammer pushes contestants off, at first I thought it was only that but thank goodness there's a flipper at the end with it. The other one next to it is also pretty much the ending obstacle to Petrified Forest, but with a rumble.

The first obstacle in the promo we see is also the ender, really not excited about that for 20 whole seasons..

E16 is also supposed to be a S9 episode with the same starter, I'm assuming those two S8 episodes are airing in S9 aswell.

If they've done the same of splitting the 20 episodes into 4 blocks of 5 episodes I reckon we'll either get one or two blocks with the remaining episodes from last series then the rest in the summer - I'm thinking 15 now and then 15 (all from the new filming block) later in the year.

Yeah, now we have presumably even longer to wait for a new course after next week. I guess there will be a third course since they dug the new pool, but who knows.

Yeah, I saw the survey. They need to get it together, everything regarding their online presence has been so sloppy. It shouldn't be hard to release their survey at the right time considering this is literally the first "new" course they've had since the start.

I know the Nicole obstacle ends in a flipper, but that doesn't really help its case for me. Every obstacle feels samey and boring. Same with the Tippy Trap (Petrified Forest-looking obstacle). I was trying to be positive yesterday when I rewatched the trailer and the Tippy Trap isn't awful, but then I became annoyed again when I remembered it ends in a Rumble Bridge emoticon This could be a great remake with real obstacles that take skill (not luck or being someone the producers want to succeed). They have so many Sweepers, Hurtles, Wrecking Balls, Dreadmills, Spinners and stuff that could be used to make new ideas. I'd much rather for instance a modified Sweeper Run (and have them resist the urge to raise the bars) than Smackwall #518.

So we don't know the obstacle directly after the Balls? Here's hoping for a miraculously good idea.

it's not much but here's a video on Wipeout's TikTok that include some more footage of the ender (i think its name is Backboned according to that survey?) and FaceTime with Nicole

Re: S9 IS NEXT WEEK

Ever since the later seasons in the original run, almost all of the obstacles included "trickery" elements such as smackwalls and rumble bridges. I'm not as annoyed by them and the other repetitive obstacles as everyone else is, but I certainly prefer the more simple and variety based obstacles.

I think a bit of Season 1, almost all of Season 2, and most of Season 3 were the best for qualifier starting and staple obstacles. Obstacles like the Topple Towers, Fender Bender, and Hoop Run for example were pretty basic in concept, but still had at least a few pretty good wipeouts, whilst being beatable if the contestant is skilled enough. Heck, the show's staple obstacle is a great example of a simple concept not always being bad or unfunny. Many people still fail to get across the balls in this reboot, but with skill, they can be cleared! They can involve trickery in obstacles in more fair ways as well. Obstacles like the Breakaway Planks and Tipsy Towers were the same "looks can be deceiving" thing that smackwalls do, but they were actually beatable if the contestant was agile enough. (their tricks are also more controlled by the actions of the contestant themselves rather than the actions of someone on the sidelines emoticon) I would like to see more obstacles, returning or new, with changing aspects about them each week. They should do this with their starter obstacles if they're starting to have all of them be in more than two episodes with this reboot. It doesn't always have to be something too big, something like the foam that we will (presumably) be getting in later Wallop Wall/Spin Cycle episodes is something that isn't that notable, but it still changes things up a bit if it ends up getting in a contestant's way. Speaking of foam... bring back variation to the Wipeout Zone (and its obstacles)!!

I think if they were to return more simplistic obstacles, maybe they would have to focus on casting more average joes again, rather than athletes, like in the previous run of the show. May partially be caused by presentation, but the more everyday people from the original seven seasons are far more memorable than the more athletic people from this new run anyways. There are also many teams that are about the same subject... there have been many newlyweds, and I feel there's been many teams that talk about beach experience, swimming, or similar topics to those.

About the smackwalls and rumble bridges again, while I don't heavily mind them, as they can still produce decent or good wipeouts, the rumble bridges in the new qualifier obstacles we've seen so far are quite frequent. The last obstacle with the two rumble bridges are basically the same obstacle as what we will be seeing six times as the second obstacle in Season 8, just longer and a bit of a different shape. I feel like it would be best if the obstacles weren't as copy pasted, and I find it okay for them to use concepts from the previous run because it has been a while, but I think it would be good if each obstacle in the qualifier was pretty different from each other. What we've seen of this new qualifier has three different obstacles with rumble bridges in them emoticon Albeit the first one is more like the trick from Snow Shovel Trouble/Winter Weasel Wheel.

Anyways, seeing the last new obstacles we haven't seen yet will be exciting! Sorry for the long post, (would have been great to put this in the survey, but I don't have as much to say about the other topics such as the hosts) I've left this sitting around for a bit now, adding more to it every so often, and should probably post it already. I'm not used to writing long stuff like this, so I'm sorry if it is hard to read/a bit inconsistent in topic.

No, I like reading longer posts! And I agree with everything there. Our new, immediate problem seems to be the endless rumble bridge stuff, but variation is also an ever-present issue. Even if they didn't want to change an obstacle every week, having two or three versions of an obstacle to switch between would even help (though the former would be best!).

I know we've had our fair share of Sweepers, but I do feel they've kind of been forgotten in this remake. And that's Sweepers in their purest form of jumping over them and not having them raise up immediately. I wouldn't mind something like the Snowplow Sweeper after the Big Balls. Or something that can vary like the Shape Shifter & Spring Fling by changing the entry point (obviously highly unlikely). And the pic we had the other week didn't look like any of these emoticon

If you're going to spend this many episodes on one course without sufficient variation, the new course should be somewhat original and very different from the one that preceded it.

Well FaceTime with Nicole is at least possible (and the clear in that clip was entertaining), but still not very good. Nothing skill-based about whether someone swings a hammer/when they flip a platform up for you to make it over the gap. The final Rumble Bridges seem to move differently than they do as starters. Still doesn't warrant using it again 20 more times. Here's where Brekkie's idea with two rumble bridges and a smaller obstacle between them would work.

Yeah, a hoop or something similar could likely be put in the middle of the two rumble bridges. I'm not sure if it would cost a lot to get something to hang it, but for the hoop itself, they could just take one from the Body Blender's two.
