Red Dwarf XI

Two nights ago I was a very lucky member of the audience for a recording of a new episode of Red Dwarf.

And when I say lucky, I really mean lucky. I had no luck getting tickets when they were first released, but I was very successful getting a standby ticket 24 hours before the day. It didn't guarantee I would get in either despite travelling all the way up to Pinewood Studios which is no where near where I live! But it was a gamble that paid off as I was the first standby ticket holder to arrive after they had a few cancellations.

As for the episode we witnessed being made, I can't go in to plot details before broadcast, but it was a funny sci fi and gag heavy story that felt a lot like the show's early days...more so than the recent series.

Being in the same room as Craig Charles (and the other three of course!) was quite something! Craig even came to join us to watch any pre recorded bits or scenes he wasn't in and was genuinely enjoying it with us which was really nice.

There were plenty of out takes/smeg ups, especially in the first two scenes...mainly from Robert Llewelyn/Kryten who had trouble with some complicated dialogue. He never lost his cool once and we were all patient but the scene was done eventually! All scenes were recorded twice for different camera angles.

The only thing that was negative (apart from diversions on the way home!) was the warm up guy. Nothing he said really made me laugh, but to be honest I was too busy looking at what was going on behind the scenes to really care.

Anyway, it was a great experience that was a dream of mine for a very long time, and came true at very short notice! I'll go into more detail on the plot, any deleted scenes, etc when the episode is aired.

Oh that's really cool. I'm glad you managed to get in and enjoyed it so much!

Warm up men are never funny. I've seen a few and at TV shows and all they're good at is making you feel uncomfortable. "Everybody dance!!" um, no, let's not.
A couple of months ago I went to the recording of the Xmas ep of Keep it in the Family (as my sister works on it and got us in before everyone else). It took FIVE hours. Imagine how much of the warm up man I sat through... emoticon A couple of good jokes but for most of his time I wanted to be invisible.

The only warm up person I've ever enjoyed is the magician John Archer in Tim Vine's shows, he can treat an audience well. Apart from that you wonder how they get the job in the first place!

I need to get back on Netflix and watch this show again. It's great.

EDIT: Nevermind, Netflix removed it. I'm not happy about that at all. emoticon

If you go to a recording of a TV show there's a 'comedian' who comes out beforehand to "warm up" the audience. They're supposed to get you laughing, clapping etc so you react how the producer wants the audience to during the filming.

I haven't seen a single episode of Red Dwarf, but it's great that you got to see one of your favourite shows live.

The series starts on 22nd September (I know you can preview it on UKTV Play a week before, but I'd rather see it go out on TV), the one I went to see is the last in the series to be aired (episode is named Can Of Worms)which will air in about 6 weeks time
