Most important topic ever (do not ignore)

All of us, some day will die. After that we will go, without control over it, to eternal peace and fun, with no suffering at all, or eternal burning, with no pleasure at all. Respond here, where will you go when you die? If you don't know, just say that.

Re: Most important topic ever (do not ignore)

While on one hand I don't much believe in anything, on the other I find it near-impossible to accept that there would be an end to my own existence.*

If there is something after death, I believe everyone will be there together and it is a state outside time, an infinity with everyone and everything that has ever existed or will (from our current perspective).
We can forever experience anything any other living thing ever experienced, an eternal library of lifetimes to see.

*=actually, I'm not quite ready to accept I'll even die; science is so tauntingly close to fixing that...
(if quantum computers could lead to birth of first real AI within a decade, perhaps that could develop biomedicine to levels we can barely imagine - longshot in my lifetime, but got to hope)

I am sorry to tell you that it sounds like you are headed towards the eternal suffering. However, all of us are by nature headed there. We all sin and do bad things, which can not be accepted into the place of eternal peace and pleasure. However, there is a way we can get to that place. Have you ever heard of Jesus?

And also, whether you can keep from dying or not, we will all go there anyway after the end of the world.

Oh, I'm a born and arguably raised christian (about as secular as you can find) and haven't even quit the church like many of my countrymen (in last decades it's become bit of a fashion).
But at most I'll call myself agnostic. For that theological, rather than philosophical/logical point of view, I see it like this:
- there either is a God (and soul etc.) or not (and I have a whole essay to say why I think we can't know which is true or even more likely than other)
- you can live your life according one or other option (or anything in between)
- if there is God, stakes are high as you point
- but it could be argued same goes the other way round: if there is no God or life after, what we have here is all we have
- so personally I'd promote a moderate way of life, equally considering both options; after all there's lots of things you can do (generally, to be nice to other people) that'll be both pleasurable/beneficial to yourself and pleasing God, if there happens to be one

There is a God. How else would this world be here? How come if I'm looking for something and can't find it, i almost always do when i pray? How come if I'm feeling bad, talking to God almost always comforts me?

And also, yes, being nice to people will please him, but it won't bring you into heaven. Only accepting Jesus in your heart will. Do you want to do that? I highly recommend it.

Re: Most important topic ever (do not ignore)

Well, religion's an interesting topic for me.

I was born and raised a Catholic and have recently confirmed my sister into the Catholic church. Part of me feels very spiritual, but I'll admit I've had my doubts in more recent years. I'm left-brained to a fault - to the point where I try to "prove" all of my opinions, values and beliefs. While this is good to have in some cases, it makes it harder for me to believe in a Higher Power, simply because I can't physically "see" it or prove its existence at this point in time. Going off on a tangent, but this type of thinking is the same reason I'm chronically uncreative and struggle to leave my comfort zone.

Now, that's not to say that's why everyone else isn't as religious, it's just my personal story. I do believe there must be a God, or at least some well-meaning power that created us. I will admit that the theory of evolution/the Big Bang Theory better appeases my logic, BUT I do feel there must be a creator of some kind as I also can't believe that all of this just came to be. There's also the issue of me worrying that God will look down on me. Not that I'm a horrible person lol, but I could definitely do better in many respects.

I agree, it's really hard to grasp not being alive in the world we know. Part of me wants to "live" forever, but at the same time that might not be all it seems - and the Earth may be too populated! I want at least something to be remembered by after I die, but honestly don't have that at this point. Of course, I've still got time, but I need to get my stuff together...

I get that this is of a religious nature, but everyone has their own beliefs. Many of the nicest people I know aren't very religious and many bad people take advantage of religion (especially my religion), so it's a very tough subject.

Those people that take advantage to Christianity aren't true Christians. And, when you accept Jesus into your heart, he forgives you for every sin you have committed and will later. He wants you to accept him. He lives all of his creations more than we can imagine
