The Big Balls Are Back, Baby!

It turns out that the sneak peek was actually the full first episode! Here are my thoughts. I won't be spoiling how contestants do.

The Qualifier consisted of Sweep and Weep, Nutcracker, Big Balls, Body Blender, and Jiggleator.

It was pretty good but they spent too much time on the contestants and not on the wipeouts. It's also about half as long as it was in the original show. We did get a few doodles and plenty of booth banter which was nice.

The Gauntlet consisted of three stages. The Carous-Hell consisted of the sweeper grab and the actual Carous-Hell. Then they went through the Messy Mile which consisted of the Wall Squeeze, Ziplines, Hurdles and Mount Wipeout. Then lastly, they went through the Pummel Pool which contained the Big Ball and See Saw (it wasn't a mechanical Yule Log), French Fries, Lollipop, and a Big Ball.

This was a lot better than I expected and looks like one of the most fun rounds to actually do. It didn't feel like it dragged on which was helped by the 2 heats with different teams and the wide variety of obstacles.

The Wipeout Zone consisted of the Silver Bullet, Vertigo, Leap of Faith, and for the third time, the Triple Threat. The Zone was done relay style. The first partner did the launch and Vertigo, and the second did the Leap of Faith and Triple Threat.

This was pretty good zone. The first run was somewhat boring but the second was absolutely hilarious. However, there is a rule that I'm sure a lot of you won't like (not the Washout skipping rule. That's gone).

Overall, this was really entertaining. The commentary was a bit iffy at first but it got pretty good around The Gauntlet. Live commentary was also a good addition. I didn't feel like I knew the contestants that well but they were still good. I just which they had more banter moments between contestants.

Not liking the sound of the relay in the Zone, though IIRC one of the international versions did that. Is it just two teams in the zone then?

If they're only doing part of it I'd rather see the opening obstacle launch both members into the zone and then one go on to tackle the first obstacle and the second swim into position for the next obstacle, and then ideally have them both do the final obstacle together. Or simply redesign the whole zone so they do it all together.

Re: The Big Balls Are Back, Baby!

I'd like to give some more complete thoughts.

The Qualifier was the worst round by far which was really a let down. They didn't show a single complete run and it was edited like a fail compilation you'd find on YouTube. While I'm glad booth segments are back, it felt like there were almost too many. The contestant blurbs are also time consuming and very boring.

The Gauntlet was pretty great. The commentary was a lot better in this round and the falls were pretty good. The Pummel Pool had some disappointing falls but it was still entertaining. The second heat was a lot more entertaining than the first.

The new zone format isn't bad. The rule I'm not going to name (because it'll spoil how zone goes) seems a bit unfair but I can see why they implemented it. The Leap of Faith was a lot better than I expected and the last obstacle gives us some close finishes.

Overall, it's pretty good. I'd rank it above season 7 and season 5 summer. John and Nicole are still getting used to commentating but I'm sure they'll get better at it over time. While they aren't bad, not bringing the Johns and Jill back really seems like a worse move than ever now that tweets like this are coming out. That's right, we've already got a scathing review of the reboot coming our way tomorrow. This guy looks like a big Nicole Byer fan and she's definitely not as entertaining here as she is on Nailed It so I can see why he's upset. I really think they need to give John and Nicole a bullet point list rather than a script. During the Qualifier and The Gauntlet, you can really tell both hosts are reading from a script. However, during the zone, the commentary comes alive and feels way more energetic. In an interview, Matt said they're trying to script the hosts as little as possible so I hope that's true for later episodes. Also, it really isn't worse than Pooch Perfect.

Here's some footage of The Gauntlet provided to us by the Wipeout Instagram page. https://www.instagram.com/p/CNGjgrHpt4F/?igshid=1f8rc4r4zy9g4

I never understand why they release episodes online early like this. It kills my excitement of just waiting for the show to air, and surely it can't be good for their actual ratings? Again, I think with the promotion they're doing to hype up this show they're trying too hard. People knowing it will air on Thursday nights on TBS at 8 PM is better less convoluted than posting them in advance. It may be a one-off, but I kind of doubt it.

I will watch the episode tonight.

So they already have one fewer round and they've halved the Qualifier? emoticon Does that mean The Gauntlet goes on forever, as surely the Wipeout Zone is short too with only two course runs emoticon

Well, The Gauntlet does sound more intriguing than I thought, and hopefully they'll change some of the Messy Mile and Pummel Pool at times. I guess it kind of makes sense if this round is the focal-point now (it is definitely the largest one), lasting for two segments of the show as a hybrid round 2-3.

I think they should show a full run in the Qualifier (namely the first run of the day), but if they're showing a bit of each team then that's alright with me. I liked how the first few seasons showed bits and pieces for a majority of the runs shown, rather than large chunks/full runs only of the competitors who make it to Round Three.

If you count the Sweeper variation from season one, this is the fourth use of the Tripe Threat name emoticon

Not good that they've already gotten a bad review. Will read it after watching. I still don't get why they chose to replace the hosts, unless it was for budget reasons. emoticon

Would someone mind recording tonight's episode and, even if they then take it off, put it on YouTube, as I have to get off all devices by 8 o'clock clock

A review from Reality Blurred, pretty much echoing what LS6 said about the qualifier, but overall not very positive.

I think to be fair to the hosts they probably just need time - rewatching season 1 last summer and in the early episodes John Henson especially was actually pretty awful. It took a few episodes for it to click.
