Preferred Start: Water or Mud?

So this is a topic I honestly don't have a clear-cut answer for, but it actually seems interesting to discuss. Do you prefer the first obstacle in an episode to be mud or water-based? This is not referring to simply your preferred substance, but more your preferred style of first obstacle. The mud pit and pool starters do tend to have some different characteristics.

I used to prefer the pool because they felt bigger and tended to be more legitimate obstacles, but this didn't necessarily hold true in the last couple of seasons. But I'd be interested to hear some others' thoughts before diving deeper or even voting on my favorite!

This isn't really something I've thought about. However, I do think that water narrowly beats out mud for me. Like you said, these tended to be the more legitimate obstacles. The fact that this pool was so massive allowed for some outstanding starters like The Blob, Swashbuckler, and the Wipeout Marinara. While there are some great mud obstacles, too many of them rely on smackwalls that they didn't even try to use in creative ways.

Staying on the topic of pools, I have a theory that the show would have been better off had they never replaced the shell pool with the rectangle pool. The three rounds we saw in this pool were Dizzy Dummies, Slippery Course, and Bruiseball. The main thing I'm gonna focus on here is Bruiseball. Bruiseball's layout fit so perfectly in this pool and it ended up being such a great round. What I'm getting at is, the shell pool forced them to be creative. The rectangle pool on the other hand gave us extremely unoriginal rounds like Sugar Smacks and FSPSPPB. The only round in the rectangle pool I'd call outstanding is the swing variation of the Wipeout Playset.

I agree regarding replacing the Dizzy Dummy pool - it basically left them with rounds that could have gone in the square pool.

As for the opener - I think having the two options actually really worked here, but on the courses that didn't have anything in the Sucker Punch area I probably preferred the mud. I'll also give a bit of credit to Winter Washout here for rejigging the start a bit to use both pools when they introduced the Dreadmill and if I were to build the course from scratch I'd probably have them start in the pool and then had a bigger mudpit where the Sucker Punch was.

Hmm... I'm going to slightly give the upperhand to the mud.

For awhile, the pool-based obstacles were the more creative ones, but I do feel that ended up switching in the end. In season 5, it brought some of the dumbest things like Swept Away, the Bar Crawl, Henson Headshots/Saloon, etc. Season 6 had some good pool obstacles, but then season 7 had its worst (of four!) starters as one of the pool ones, which was basically just a flipping panel.

Also feel like the show itself favored mud obstacles. Let's see how many pool and mud obstacles there were...

There were 59 pool appearances
AND
69 mud appearances

Well, not as big of a difference as I thought actually, but it makes sense given that a lot of the earlier courses & season 7 gave an extra episode to the mud pit and one fewer episode to the pool.

I voted for water. I find it more pleasant. I am not a huge vote for mud due to the information that I find it repulsive to look at. I find that creepy. I would hate to be covered in mud! I would not play you know? I find it genteel. I think the bouncy balls were played in the water anyway right? I find them iconic to view.
