Wipeout returning for new 20-part season on TBS

Wipeout is set to return on TBS in a retooled format for a 20 part season.

Episodes will play out over three rounds rather than four and will include a three-part obstacle course which includes strategic decisions being required (that sounds !@#$, and also like a blurb for a recent show that was announced which I can't remember). The Big Balls will be back.

If they capture the spirit of the early series it'll be great. If they don't, it won't.

Funnily enough I was thinking about how Wipeout could work in a socially distant world with 3 rounds rather than 4 as so much can be done individually. The second round (say with 8 cutting the field to 4) can either be individual time trials or Duels with contestants far enough away from each other (Sweeper Duels would be great). However I did neglect to think about them sharing the water, but I think chlorine kills the thing anyway.

No word on hosts or where they're filming - the original course is largely intact and has since been used for Ultimate Beastmaster and more recently Holey Moley.

Wow!! emoticon As you said before, it wasn't a matter of if, but a matter of when. Good to have something to look forward to after this outbreak is done with.

So a slightly smaller show, but that could still work alright as long as they use the right obstacles. And as long as they have the same hosts and set. If they change that, it won't really feel like the same show at all emoticon

The strategy thing sounds a bit annoying, so let's hope it's not very intrusive...

Depending on how this goes, we may need to bring back our Wipeout section emoticon

I do think the show can afford to lose a round (especially as in later years Round 2 & 3 weren't as distinct as earlier seasons) and could have 16 > 8 > 4 instead of 24 > 12 > 6 > 4(later 3). Assuming TBS structure the show like ABC it'll just mean one extra part spent on the qualifier, which they often did for their extended specials anyway. I'd guess they'll be 2 or 3 alternates for Round 2, though fear that might be where they put this three part obstacle stage in.

Just hope they concentrate on fun rather than competition - that completely killed the show when they changed it up at ABC. The show isn't about the athletism or achievement like Ninja Warrior is - it's about having a bit of fun and potentially winning some cash at the end of it. Only the Wipeout Zone should be more serious in tone (and FFS, no skipping obstacles!).

 emoticon emoticon emoticon

I mean this in the most PC way possible, but I know they're doing this mainly because they can't have three white people hosting the show. So OMG we need all-new hosts.

Of course, I'm more than happy to see diversity in the hosting booth, but if that's why they've changed it, I'm annoyed.

This course better be amazing then.

All I'm saying is that there was no reason to change the hosts. Therefore, I have a feeling that they made that move for the reason of diversity. It goes without saying that I want diversity but IF this is the reason for the change then it's silly. I see no other reason to change it. If they just want new people, then fair enough.

As long as they don't decide to cast celebrities to make the show "cooler". Or (even better), cast a bunch of TikTok stars because that'll make the show even better.

Plus, I'm a Boomer when it comes to hosts. The main reason I didn't like seasons 2 and 3 of Beastmaster was because they got rid of Terry and Charissa emoticon

Nothing to do with them being white and everything to do with them being old - or at least older, both in terms of what producers want and the three themselves moving on with their careers.

I think with revivals you have to remember the right choice of hosts for the original may not be the right choice of hosts now - even if the Johns had returned I'd be surprised if Jill did due to pure ageism. It is of course also possible that firstly none of them wanted to return, and with it being TBS rather than ABC the budget wasn't there to pay their fees anyway.

When I saw TBS were rebooting it, I thought it was TBS from Japan!, which is kind of ironic.

I enjoyed the first three seasons but it went downhill with too many smack walls and mechanical obstacles. I felt the Winter and Spring seasons was an overkill too.

I'll be interested to see how it goes, but three rounds and a new presenting team doesn't fill me with hope at the moment.

Okay, I can definitely agree with that. Look at John Henson's last Instagram post emoticon He's making me feel old.

I do think since they were the main reason the show lasted through its last couple of seasons they should be brought back anyway, but oh well.

But onto the most important thing and that's the courses.

So here's about what I'm hoping for/expecting:

Qualifier:
1st obstacle (better vary weekly)
Guessing they'll go straight to the Big Balls, probably a Motivator of some sort
3rd obstacle is probably some swinging/shaking platform (hopefully with lots of ways to modify it!)
4th obstacle would probably be their themed one

2nd Rounds:

I would expect three second rounds, and I would really like to see each have a different style of play (to mix it up more).

So one race as we came to expect from the later series, one time trial and one "stay on as long as possible" game.

Wipeout Zone:

I dunno but I expect this round to have a lot of throwback obstacles from earlier seasons (and I wouldn't be complaining!). I could definitely see the Spinner making a return, not sure what else TBH.

Okay, that wasn't all that insightful emoticon But that's a good outline for how it should be done, I think.

Will be interesting to see who returns with this news. We've had Brekkie and Sydez, so hope a lot more Wipeoutheads see the news emoticon
