Takeshi's Castle Thailand UK has aired in Germany, too. They hired Oliver Kalkofe to do the voice-over, he's best known for doing a TV show where he makes fun of bad TV (either by doing rants or playing OTT versions of the protagonists.. here's an English version: [url][sign in to see URL]

He also co-hosts "The worst movies of all times", kinda like a German version of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

His commentary is better than the one in the UK, actually a bit similar to the RTL2 commentary, but a bit better. I wouldn't mind watching more episodes with Kalkofe.

Also worth noting: They translated all British names into German instead of making up their own names (like they did on RTL2). And Spud is "cat poo on two legs or whatever that is).

They also had the Honeycomb Maze somewhere in Germany to promote the series, just like they did in the UK.

Interesting. He sounds like he actually gives a damn about what he does so that already puts him worlds apart from Wossy.

Spud had already become the "cat poop" in the UK version. They renamed quite a few things.

Er... in the UK? Really? emoticon

Glad the German version sounds better, but I still feel that these TC voiceover hirers are getting the wrong type of people for the job. I feel anyone who hosts a "mocking" TV show shouldn't also host Takeshi's Castle, because their type of commentary/humor will probably just prove the point that's TC exists purely to laugh at people falling down emoticon

Yup, they had winners of some contest try a rather realistic version of the Honeycomb Maze, complete with two guards, around the end of last year. It was actually a good enough rebuild (for probably not THAT much money) that I thought they should have built several more games and made their own new version!

That's what I was expecting, but no. He does decent commentary with the odd cheap joke in between "Bridge Ball is like walking a box of pizza home after a drunk night out" or when he compared Pauline Monroe to a tinder date: Reality doesn't meet expectations, but you still make out.

He does a decent job, indeed. I think he really cares about doing a good job, because he's fighting against bad TV, that's his tagline. When he mocked the German Takeshi rip-off, he actually mentioned Takeshi.

So, they copied that one, too. I knew that the UK changed a few things, but didn't know about cat poop (or forgot about it).

Another thing I forgot to ask about: Do you know if they wanted to get Russell Kane for the UK version? The German EPG text always says that Russell Kane provides commentary. emoticon

That's astounding to me, very glad to hear it!

Also, I forgot to say it last time, but nice to see you again, Fern.. er Codex emoticon

Wow, that UK Honeycomb Maze is pretty damn cool! emoticon It's a bit small but they did a good job. Those lucky sons of guns...

Yeah, with a new lick of paint (of a different color obv.), I think it'd work well on a remake. I wonder if they've destroyed it, or if it's still in storage somewhere?

Considering it has been used in Germany as well I guess they use it as promo for every series they do around the world.
