Racism on the Show?

This is of course not meant to ruffle any feathers, but I was watching Takeshi's Castle tonight and ran across a few people who painted parts of their faces with black paint. I personally understand that it could have been an oversight, but for me it's unfortunate it got through and should've been spotted. If intentional then I sincerely find that disgusting and the contestants should've not only been made to wash it off but be banned from ever appearing on this show or any of TV.

It was an international episode and I think a bunch of Americans all playing at the same time in Quake. Then one later in Wipe Out and Bridge Ball. I've seen it a couple times before but not thought much of it or realized. To keep it fair, I did see someone use white facepaint a few times.

Unless this was just a bunch of paint from the Maze?

What do you think?

I remember the people you're talking about, but can't remember if it was from the Maze. I have a feeling it was.

Although there were a couple of instances of people painting their faces black. A couple of the sketches had the guards pretending to be African.

This was the 80s, and this was Japan. This kind of thing was seen as okay back then. Obviously it wouldn't happen today, but if you go back 30 years you'll find this kind of thing a lot.

I'm sorry if I seem to take it rough but I just don't understand it or improve it.

Anyway, I guess I must let it go. It's not gonna ruin the show for me but still think it's disgusting.

The fact they were in the same round of Quake didn't improve things for me.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it wasn't okay at all, but that's how things were back then. I don't understand the world of the past!

Me neither. The world of the past or present! emoticon

I guess there were over 15,000 contestants on the show so we just have to stand a few bad ones.

The Japanese have always had instances of stereotyping Africans, or perceiving them to look a certain way. I've seen a lot worse than a few guards pretending to be African, or contestants painting their faces.

It doesn't excuse it, but it was the 80s, things flew back then that would be inexcusable now.

They still do the racial stereotype thing now. While I've not seen anyone dressed as a black person, they do have the 'all Western people have huge noses and blonde hair' thing. That's still as bad, but not seen that way because they're not changing their skin colour.

Mind you, messup is from the US. People there are more sensitive when it comes to blackface. Not 100% sure about the UK, but Europe has never had any problems with people painting their face black. It's just been in the last couple of years that people actually discussed blackface and racism. So I see why Messup is confused and we aren't (at least not that much).

So just an explanation. Blackface wasn't seen wrong, it was (and sometimes still is) part of everyday and even religious life. (And if the church does it, it can't be wrong.. at least to some people who've probably never heard the Galileo story).

The Netherlands had the Zwarte Piet, kinda like their version of Santa's Little Helper, but he's more like a servant. It has always been a white person with a colored face.

Here in Germany the Roman-Catholic Church have kids playing the Three Wise Man, walking from house to house, collecting money for a charity project and bless the house. They've always been white people (at least at the places where I lived) and one used blackface.

So it's was a different culture in general and I'd guess that Japan is much more similar to Europe than to the US. And if they are similar to Europe, I doubt that most people would see it as racism, because so many people here in Germany don't (not including me).

Personally, when I was a kid, I always thought that they blackened their face so the black-handed guards wouldn't be able to do so... similar to how some people were masks etc.

I can't recall anyone doing it on UK TV during my lifetime. Blackface has always been associated with some kind of early 20th century stereotype of black people being not very clever (coming from slavery is assume). I think that's why it's seen as so offensive, rather than simply the painting of the skin itself.

But then there was Endurance UK where two white guys dressed as stereotypical Japanese men and coloured their skin to look more Asian. So seemingly it was seen as okay as long as it's not black. Double standards as usual.
