Re: ANW All-Stars Special

A little bit (or a whole lot!) late, but here goes my review of Monday's episode:

There were some very cool new obstacles. Snake Curve wasn't the most creative idea ever but a huge improvement on Piston Road. It had some strange step placements that nobody used though and it took out Travis somehow emoticon I thought the returning obstacles were pretty stale though - mainly Jumping Spider and Warped Wall. The Propeller Bar is still a cool obstacle but I feel like it should go in favor of something simpler next year. Sonic Curve with the different angles of steps was even easier and the obstacle was already tiresome at the end of last year. I preferred the Half Pipe Attack as it was a cooler design and most speed-oriented.

The Giant Log Grip would've been 10 times better if it weren't all about sticking the landing. I think Kevin was the only one to go out on the log part! And I was sad to see him fall there as a side note emoticon

The Broken Bridge wasn't too harsh but that guy who failed it had a crazy fall! There were some last minute catches too so it wasn't boring to watch really. The Flying Squirrel didn't prove to be as tough as I thought but still fun to watch. I definitely wouldn't mind seeing it return next year with a larger gap.

It's funny how the first four obstacles all unexpectedly took out a great: Travis Rosen on Snake Run, Ian Dory on the Propeller Bar, Kevin Bull on the Giant Log Grip and James Mcgrath on the Jumping Spider (I'm probably missing more though). Actually, the first half of the course took out a lot more than the second half which is surprising too.

And Jessie!! That was awesome emoticon emoticon emoticon She finished and with a great time too

My stage 1 next year (sticking with their format of course) would be:

Angle Run from Kuno but with four jumps between slopes
Giant Giant Swing
Giant Frame Slider (no drops)
Giant Jump Hang
Half Pipe Attack
Warped Wall (add 1')
Roller Run (four rollers hung by ropes on either end to run across)
Flying Squirrel

On another note, there's a new Crashing the Course of stage 2. The number of people that clear stage 1 is spoiled in it though ( emoticon ) so watch out!:

Why it's about stage 2 I don't know, we're still in stage 1 this week! I guess since stage 2/3(?)/4(?) are in one episode, they want to release each stage weekly so figured this would help fill the void even though it's a week early.

I like the Giant Ring Swing, and that it combines something from the Ring Jump with the second lache. But since they added the lache in, it feels like this would be better off stuck in stage 3 as stage 2 is all about speed. Well it's better than Rope Jungle!

I'm glad they're using the Up and Down Salmon Ladder (official name?!), not that they act like they created it. Didn't think they would start stealing from Sasuke again.

They didn't mention it but I saw the hourglass bridges from Indie Finals after it so good to see some change from the norm there too... and no trampoline!!!

They do have their luck-based jumping here though because they kept the Butterfly Wall and added a trampoline. Why??!! emoticon I don't totally understand how it'll work so it might be interesting we'll see. But where's my Balance Tank? emoticon

The Double Wedge is fifth. Okay they don't want any winners. I really don't see anybody clearing this, but at least the ninjas have a second bar to jump to and don't have to clear the gap using the same bar.

If anyone does survive, the Wall Lift has been removed in favor of the Wall Flip. It's pretty much the same thing but you have to lift up the walls and flip them like panels.

So an all new stage 2 that I really like the looks of. Besides obstacles 4 and 5 this should be a fun, fair stage! emoticon

Re: ANW All-Stars Special

The second half was good too, but something about it felt samey and predictable - probably because it was the same obstacles and they said how many would clear emoticon

Geoff's balance was so bad, I don't how he could've lost it! It's almost like he fell in on purpose.. emoticon Well now he's done with ANW, hopefully they'll let him take part in Sasuke next year emoticon

The girl who died of cancer really made me sad, but it was nice to see Joe give her a mention and say how much she liked the show. That was really nice.

Anyway Stage 2/3 tomorrow! I'm not watching CTC because I'm worried they'll spoil how many made it past Stage 2 emoticon

Re: ANW All-Stars Special

The finale was tonight! I thought stage 2 was kind of rubbish. Giant Ring Swing too slow as a stage 2 opener and hardly visible with the red panels in the background. The bars and then blocks between it and the Down Up Salmon Ladder (don't get me started on that name!) was sort of awkward. The Salmon Ladder modification took out some people, but none on the new part emoticon Although I wonder if having to go down and straight into upwards movement threw some people off?? It wasn't bad, but I didn't love it, especially being able to transfer to the resting bar before reaching the top of the Ladder.

The Waverunner was an interesting take on the Unstable Bridge, but I might like to see the bridges hanging from chains make a comeback, but with these kinds of shapes. I didn't like that it eliminated Flip. And as much as I like Drew, it seemed like he cut it too close. Move the platform back, so there's no controversy. The trampoline just made the Butterfly Wall easier. Did they even move the platform back? emoticon You either don't fail this or you fail it because you're short. No one did this time around though.

Double Wedge was okay, but different from regionals. Not in a bad way just different (eg it wasn't mainly about the dismount). The Wall Flip wasn't just an excuse to replace the Wall Lift as I thought as it brought in new movements emoticon I thought the last wall would serve as a ramp to the higher platform at the end though, which'd be cool. Maybe they couldn't do it or it was never the plan?

The time-limit was way too long though and I feel like Stage 2 should be about speed. No 3 minutes. Or even 2. Make the obstacles easier/simpler/quicker and lower the time-limit emoticon

I like the Keylock Hang (name?), as it brings a new dynamic to the Circuit Board. The bars at the beginning were random, but apparently the plan was to put the Psycho Chainsaw to open again (shame they didn't) so they had to resort to this.

The Floating Boards modification was way too subtle and I feel they've been around way past their expiration date now. The Ultimate/Crazy Cliffhanger was fine with the modifications and standing on a ledge was actually interesting. The ledges are still too wide though emoticon

The Body Prop Curve Thing was great-looking and I can't believe Drew cleared that! I definitely wouldn't mind having that replace the Floating Boards next year! The Hang Climb took Drew out though. Gutted. He grabbed the wrong rock.

At least we didn't have to relive the terror of the Walking Bar emoticon

So for next year:

Stage 1:

Time limit: 2:15

Angle Run from Kuno but with four jumps between slopes
Giant Giant Swing
Giant Frame Slider (no drops)
Giant Jump Hang
Half Pipe Attack
Warped Wall (add 1')
Roller Run (four rollers hung by ropes on either end to run across)
Flying Squirrel

Stage 2:

Time limit: 1:30

Downhill Jump
Invisible Ladder
Waverunner (Unstable Bridge-style)
Balance Tank
Metal Spin
Wall Flip (with the epic ramp up at the end emoticon

Stage 3:

Psycho Chainsaw into
Flying Bar (two hop version)
Curved Body Prop
Cliffhanger Drop (cross the "Cliffhanger Kai" version of the Cliffhanger and drop five feet onto a six-inch-wide ledge)
Descending Climb (as you'd guess)
Ascending Climb
Arm Bike (upwards)
Pipe Slider

Stage 4:

Time limit: 55 seconds

Spider Climb (20 feet)
swinging Pole Climb (a pole that will swing around as it's losely hung, 20 feet)
Rope Climb (30 feet)

Re: ANW All-Stars Special

And since I never did, I'll review All-Stars.

Adding Christine to the Team competition was a move I can agree with as it gave it a bit more substance. Plus, they only had one match (relays) in each stage so saved a lot of time. It was wise using worst two in Stage 1 go into elimination round on Stage 2 and the winner of this round goes onto face the top Stage 1 team on Stage 3. Was also awesome seeing Nicolas Coolridge casually scale up the Hang Climb and just hang from it with one arm afterwards. Seeing the Walking Bar and Flying Bar for the first time in this location/for this season was nice too. Flip was amazing on both. Oh and I feel bad for Mheagan on Stage 2, completely whiffing the trampoline.

A quicker team comp gave about 20 extra minutes for the Skills Comps, which was nice. I'd still much rather forget the Team Comp and show every Skills part even though the team can be cool too emoticon

Okay uh...

Endless (well 40 second's worth of) Invisible Ladder was neat, although would've been good if they'd made that the new Stage 4 (or at least half of it) for the regular Season 8. I get the feeling that they expected it to be much harder though, I guess it all comes down to being fresh and not exhausted yet.

Having Warped Wall in the middle was weird but I guess because nothing amazing happened. Flip still did really well just whiffed. The Giant has betting odds here though emoticon

Salmon Ladder was at about the same place at it was last year. It looked like another giveaway to Mike Bernardo for awhile, and wow that was a real nail-biter. The winning time was a minute, I believe so not being super fast and containing energy paid off. Impressive emoticon

Super Sonic Shelf Grab was last, probably because it had the new record and the sun was coming up. Even though it took a redo (which I wasn't too sure on, but what the heck), Drew's 15-foot leap was tremendous!! Can't even imagine. I do feel like maybe they should move on from this to a "Super Squirrel" (or something) competiton with the Flying Squirrel's swinging handle jumps, because there isn't much more leverage for improvement on the Shelf Grab I'm afraid.

They cut the Pegboard, Big Air and Sonic Step rounds, but they actually posted them on Youtube which I'm proud of them for doing emoticon

Somehow it didn't feel so special this year, because not many records were smashed. I think having maybe a new type of special and a Skill Comp-only episode every year would be good, at least until they find a good second special. Tired of USA vs "South America" (emoticon) that Japan wasn't invited to.

The most uncommon dessert ever:

A pineapple upsidedown cake served right-side-up over a strawberry shortcake that is quite tall over a fruitcake that tastes good

Re: ANW All-Stars Special

I watched the Celebrity edition tonight. And emoticon emoticon

I was expecting maybe a toned-down course, but one that the competitors did their best on and that was treated as a regular competition. Instead it was an hour of Iseman begging for people to donate and celebrities that were both annoying and not too athletic. Walking along the beam by the side of obstacles is dumb and as Anderson said about the 'Tidal Wave' woman "deserves a hefty time-penalty". Anyway, the course looks decent, excited to actually see people try it emoticon

Important Dates:

May 4th - American Ninja Warrior USA vs. The World

May 12th - Start of regular ANW season
