Re: Anime

Essay time! Yay!

TV broadcast of shows that are not merchandise-driven in the Pokemon vein is largely unviable in a market like the UK and Ireland anymore. Anime Central, which brought cult hits Bleach, Wolf's Rain and Fullmetal Alchemist to these parts for the first time, showed that since we're so much smaller than the US, channels can't stay open for very long because they can't make enough of a profit out of the very small ratings from viewers tuning in for uncut anime after 9pm. In a market as huge as the US, it's more achievable. Thus, we are forced to shell out ourselves for DVDs, Blu-rays and streaming to see new stuff. For me it's more painful because I remember the time when anime exploded in popularity in the early 2000s, and every kids channel fell over themselves to get as many of the merch-driven shows as they could, giving us some nice colourful things to look at after school, then in the evenings for us teens we had Toonami to give us heavier going such as Dragonball Z, Gundam Wing and Tenchi Muyo - all of which I now have on DVD. emoticon

The awesomeness of Dragonball has been introduced to the next generation now, though, with Kix getting hold of Dragonball Z Kai. emoticon

Fox Kids also got in on the act with Digimon to counter Pokemon on CITV, plus the amazing Escaflowne - Vision of Escaflowne to give it its uncut title, and it was shown in its uncut form on Anime Central, to our delight - and the fabulous Sailor Moon, who for me is one of the best female fictional characters ever. I like to think she taught a generation that a show can be girly, but that doesn't mean only girls can watch. People of all ages today have learned that lesson from My Little Pony, really, haven't they?

Fox Kids later became Jetix, and gave us Naruto, which came with a brilliant piece of marketing in the early days, showing the edited version on TV then advertising the uncut show on DVD. "Featuring scenes not shown on TV!" Way to drum up interest!

Sadly, we've all grown up, and with the thing we've debated before elsewhere, namely the marketing guys deciding that 'kids' means 12 and under, that means that we have missed Toonami returning as it did in America. It's as if the feeling is that we all purchase the shows ourselves, so there's no need to air it on the telly, as noted above. Some good stuff is slipping through, though. Never expected to see Inazuma Eleven making it over here, for example. Takes me back to the days of the Hurricanes on CITV, that does.

Haven't seen anything to recommend this year. Me and my sister are in a bit of a bind right now, though. We've been asked if anything we've seen can be recommended to our 12 year old (at the time of writing) cousin, who's seen much of Studio Ghibli's stuff - don't get this perception of them as being kiddy friendly, sure they've done some good family stuff, but have you SEEN some of their other output! - but wants to see some anime series now rather than movies. Thing is unless she's into the fighting stuff, most of what we've got on DVD is something we'd rather wait until she's a little older before we start lending them out. What that says about me and my sister, I dunno. emoticon

Gotten pretty dry here too, the recent years after the major anime boom. Nothing but Pokemon on TV right now.

I too have number of stuff that... wouldn't be for 12 year olds.

As an extreme example, one word: tentacles emoticon

Some people hate it (not saying me)

A lot of gen 5 Pokémon are hated emoticon

Well I guess it's pre-evolution is kinda cute. I think that Audino is cute too (it's mega evolution looks silly but still cute). It works at Pokémon Centers in the Black and White anime series.

I don't know any of the new Pokemon. By 'new' I mean after the second generation.

PS: Alex, could you please reduce the size of your signature? Thanks!

Thank you Alex!

I'll try/guess:

1. A

2. C.

3. A.

You posted that twice emoticon emoticon

Also, most of those seem to have logic involved - or they're tricks!

Three was the one I wasn't able to logic through, but for someone who's never seen/played Pokemon that wasn't too bad emoticon
