Re: Ninja Warrior Germany

I think they were suing them for copying Takeshi's Castle rather than Sasuke, but yeah Wipeout definitely gave Ninja Warrior the boost.

So actually Wipeout shot itself in the foot, as by intentionally copying these other shows they created interest in obstacle formats, boosting their rival to a popularity far above their own level in the end. Karma?

Re: Ninja Warrior Germany

Wipeout was a bit unlucky that the mother company of G4, who used to air Ninja Warrior and later American Ninja Warrior, bought NBC and had a big outlet for their show.

Nobody would have cared about that show if it was still on G4.

And then I think Ninja Warrior's the better format for the USA. Americans love serious competitions, don't they. And Wipeout wasn't one anymore. It was just a smackfest.

I wonder if that 'Wipeout Extreme' was going to feature sob stories and pointless background VTs of each contestant so that we knew this meant EVERYTHING to them and their WHOLE LIFE HAS LEAD UP TO THIS POINT (duh).

If it was, what a shame it never happened... emoticon

I doubt that they ever had a proper idea for Wipeout Extreme. I guess it was just a basic idea as in "Something similar to Ninja Warrior", an act of desperation.

ABC has never mentioned Wipeout Extreme. And the crew was probably hoping that somebody would pick the show up when it gets extreme.

Ha yeah, you're probably right.

We'll see what they do with the inevitable revival in a few years time emoticon

Agree it would have been taken more seriously and we'd already seen signs of that in the commentary for the final season, which ruined the show completely. And then despite doing that they then took the difficulty out of the most competitive bit of the show by adapting the Washout rules for the zone.

Re: Ninja Warrior Germany

Some new information: They'll film the first series over six days in May in an arena and air it during the summer months. They haven't given an exact date though, not even the number of episodes.

It will be hosted by three people, two of them never worked for RTL, which is a bit unusual. One of them is the guy who did the commentary on Schlag den Raab. The other one is a female football host for a different channel. And the third one is a former VIVA host who already hosted some shows for RTL.

Also the show's official title will be "Ninja Warrior Germany - Die stärkste Show Deutschlands" (Ninja Warrior Germany - Germany's strongest show).. bit of a pun here.. because "stark" can not only mean strong or intense, but also awesome.

But obviously... shows like that always need ridiculous subtitles. We love our subtitles. (Sometimes we even give movies new English names and are then worried that nobody will understand it, so that we'll give it a German subtitle).

Remember, Wipepout used to be "Wipeout - Don't cry, run!" and when they aired that highlight episodes years after its cancellation it became "Wipeout - Now it's going flat out"

Sister channel RTL Nitro will air American Ninja Warrior with German dub soon. In the meantime, you can also watch photos and videos from the auditions on their Facebook page:

In an arena? So it's probably going to be exactly the same course as the UK one. Multiple weeks of the same thing, until the last couple of weeks where they add some different obstacles onto the end of the same thing emoticon

Yeah, probably.

They should have done it like the Japanese people though and show the event on one day. Germans are used to really long TV shows (Schlag den Raab, anyone?) and I guess that they'll do two hour episodes anyway.

I suppose it's too much time and expense to set up for only one event-style show. If the episodes are going to be two hours long though I hope there is more variety in it than in the UK version emoticon
