Well it's nice that someone has finally had the honestly to say it's over. Not that it comes as any shock whatsoever! But well done John.
It's been really strange how it's demise has been kept top secret - don't think the shows own accounts have acknowledged it at all. US networks have no shame in axing shows and they got 7 years out of it - two more than they should have done really. That is one of the longest running summer shows of recent times (heck, even in season shows rarely last that long, especially game shows) - most are lucky to make it passed season 2.
It is just a shame that ABC didn't confirm before last season that it would be the final run. I think with the reduced episode run and just the one course it was kind blatantly obvious, while producers throwing in the Sweeper and bringing back the Sucker Punch shows they knew like we did the shows days were numbered, but I think had it been an official final series it could have been so much different if they'd had the sense to make it a celebration of the show and use more of the classic obstacles.
I suspect too knowing it was the end more people would have stuck with it till the bitter end rather than bailing out after a couple of episodes given they'd seen everything they were going to see.

Re: Wipeout Is Officially Over
I've still not watched any of last year's episodes. It's not particularly the smackwalls and one course that's putting me off (used to the dissapointment of those), but the way they ruined the Zone with the idiotic skipping rule. I just can't be bothered to sit through an episode when the final is going to be such an anticlimax.

Re: Wipeout Is Officially Over
Everything just seemed to suck a bit last year. Only thing I remember favourably is the Space Race round, but then I only saw that a couple of times so hadn't tired of it.
Just rewatched the first two episodes from series 2 - actually a shame it still isn't going internationally as there is so much from season 2 & 3 which hadn't made it's way to the international courses as after all only 4 out of 14 courses got built in Argentina (and only 3 zones).
Looks like they've already begun removing the course - not sure when Google last updated but the lining from the zone has gone and all the water, plus the "graveyard". Wonder where all that will end up - any Big Balls on EBay?
Google Maps
Quite depressing really seeing the course in it's dying days.

Re: Wipeout Is Officially Over
I don't think anything permanent has been removed from that Google Maps image, the lining for the Zone has always been black to blend in more at night. I'd have thought that they would leave anything that can't easily be dismantled unless the space is needed for something else. They used one of the pools for the final round on 101 Ways to Leave a Gameshow so I'd have thought as long as it wasn't costing them much to keep them installed but dry they've got some pools they could use on future productions.

Re: Wipeout Is Officially Over
It's a shame Google don't date their aerial photos.
They used square round three pool in Fear Factor too. Now they've got that Bullseye show I wouldn't be surprised if it popped up on that too. They'll probably leave them all to be used as water tanks on whatever their latest show is. Then when they manage to get their Wipeout revival in six years time they'll still be there ready..!

Re: Wipeout Is Officially Over
wow I don't go here a lot anymore
not surprised at this news, it lasted a long ass time on the air and even if the last season wasn't total garbage it still probably wouldn't have helped, the show was declining in ratings since season 4 or 5?
personally even with the problems I could talk about the later season I still enjoyed every one except for that awful last one tbh
also not surprised at the lack of an official announcement until now, I believe fear factor was pretty quiet on it's cancellation for a while and it was made by the same people

Re: Wipeout Is Officially Over
Still no official official announcement from Wipeout themselves. All they're doing it pushing this Wipeout Run thing. But then, as Sydez says, I don't think they've ever announced that Fear Factor was canceled. Not even to this day! It's as if they don't say it it won't be true
Great way to treat your loyal viewers.

Re: Wipeout Is Officially Over
I wonder given the way American TV works with lots of shows going into syndication and being shown a lot as reruns that it would actually do them more harm than good announcing it had been cancelled, it might draw attention to the dying brand and everything becoming older and something you've seen all before.

Re: Wipeout Is Officially Over
Not really, syndication is based largely around axed or ended shows and the networks have no shame in publicly renewing a show for it's fourth season just to make the 88 episodes usually required for syndication. The US is pretty honest when it comes to axing shows - they don't pretend they're "resting" them like other countries.
Also Wipeout hasn't been a flop at all - it's one of the most successful summer shows ever and with approximately 130 episodes (some 2-hrs specials are rerun as 2 episodes) the series is prime for reruns. Indeed I think it's been syndicated on Tru-TV for a few years - I remember they did some great stings incorporating their logo in the course.
Actually looking back at the episode guide for last year although cut to one course and 13 episodes as they had three 2-hour shows they did produce as many hours as previous seasons - just for half the price!
