Re: Making of Crystal Maze

So the present series came to an end last night, so I'll give my thoughts on the revival:

It's definitely the best game show revival I've seen, they got a lot of stuff right (recreations of the 3 zones along with a new Future zone, the games were very good, prizes still rubbish, and they kept to the old format).

I really liked Richard's presenting style as the series went on, he's wonderfully deadpan and his hand on a stick always amused me.

But there are some things that need fixing, the zone transitions are a mess: I understand in real life the zones aren't really connected together (don't know if that was the case in the original), but I would of preferred it if they stuck to the clockwise/anti clockwise route when changing zones.

I understand for budget reasons there wasn't a moat round the dome or an Aztec river, so I'll let them off.

If they made an extra 5 or 6 games for the whole of the series, then there would be a bigger variety (the balls on the circular platform was the only skill game in Aztec for example).

But on the whole it's a remake I'm mostly happy with, and will welcome another series if it should happen. Christmas special later in the year.

The zones were definitely connected in the original. The crappy fake entrances and exits still irritate me in this new version. The worst of all is the (what’s supposed to be a) tunnel into Aztec, which now is the entrance to the zone yet they still sometime soon us it as the way from one zone to another. How can it be both things? emoticon

Also, why isn’t the waterfall in Aztec the entrance to the zone? It looks like there’s a hole behind the water, so why don’t they enter through that? That’d be ten times better. Not even sure what the point of building that waterfall was when it’s been on screen about 10 seconds in total the whole series.

Richard is far better than I expected him to be. I like him now and think he doesn’t a really good job. I just wish he didn’t make references to editing and sets all the time. It’s meant to be a real place, not a TV set.

To be honest, you don’t need to watch every episode. The games are repeated so much. That bloody totem pole one is in almost every episode.

Oh, that's a turn-off emoticon

Is this certainly a one-off thing or might they do another season?

Well they filmed 20 episodes, or something like that, so there’s still a bunch left to show, which I guess they’re going to call series 2. Which is another dumb idea, as it’s going to have exactly the same games. emoticon

Oh that makes sense, I was confused how they could've shown them all already!

I recall it was 26, but five of those were the Celebrity Specials anyway.
