Making of Crystal Maze

A fantastic article with Richard O Brien, Mumsie, producer, and first team captain about the CM's creation:

That was really interesting. Would love to see the pilot and what exactly it was like. In a studio, like a gameshow, yet they dressed Richard in some kind of costume? Sounds really odd!

I can't believe they'd built the Dome for Fort Boyard. emoticon What were they even imagining they could use it for!? The only place it could fit is in the courtyard, and it'd look massively out of place.

Agreed, it would of been great to know what the dome's original purpose was!

Glad they persuaded Richard to do one more series, Series 4 was probably the best series (in my eyes anyway).

The 1990 series of Fort Boyard, in particular the treasure room, was very different to the one of today (it was basically like TCM, only keys, and instead of a clue word you used the keys to open boxes, the gold vault they have today didn't exist). I reckon they'd have put it in there and I presume they'd have painted it darker to fit it in better.

It still would have looked really out of place if it was all plastic though emoticon Maybe it was just some kind of metal frame they'd built rather than the actual dome as we know it?

Also, that must mean that the idea of collecting crystals was becuase of the dome, rather than the dome being built to represent a giant crystal.

It's still strange to imagine a world where the fort was finished on time. Richard running around Fort Boyard and the Crystal Maze never existing!

What surprises me the most is that they actually paid a fee to Fort Boyard. You can see that Crystal Maze evolved from Fort Boyard, yet it feels so different. It's kinda like what the X-Factor has been to Idol. Same idea, but new show.

Well I suppose becuase they'd already paid towards Fort Boyard, with the intention of filming that, they'd already set up a contact so couldn't just break it and then make something with a very similar format back home. That'd be a one way ticket to the courts! But becuase the Crystal Maze was only ever made in the UK, and all those years ago, it makes it seem strange that the French company hold the rights over it.

It's funny that Boyard is now kind of copying what was a copy of itself by theming each game.

Oh, didn't think of them already paying money when I wrote my post. It makes sense then.

In case you don't know, the Crystal Maze will be "recreated" in London for a special event.

Below are the people in charge, and they're joined by Mr O'Brien himself:

I'm finding it hard to imagine that it'll be anything like the proper show. The artists illustration just looks like it's a big room with vague theming for different zones in each corner emoticon

Kind of tempted by the crystal they're offering for £30 though. emoticon
