Re: Interview with MXC Co-Creator Paul Abeyta

I respect the alternate universe idea, but really, I still can't sit through a whole MXC without a lot of effort. I just keep trying to reach for the remote because most of the stuff is just single entendres and as Paul put it, it was a "dirty little show that made Fart Jokes and Penis and Vagina Jokes". To me, that's just not funny. To me, just saying dirty stuff on it's own isn't funny, it's just rude, and that's uncomfortable to watch. You need fancy elaborate build ups to the puns and innuendos to say that stuff, just doing the equivalent of going 'huh, huh, you said c**k' doesn't work. The bit about "he clearly doesn't look like a Valdez" also doesn't work for me, not because I think that's disrespectful, but because I think it's lazy. The old saying goes "don't like, don't watch", and with MXC, that's sadly true for me. Which is strange, though, since most Japanese shows now absolutely HAVE to be raw in America now, as they've gone completely the other way and become massive snobs about that sort of thing. As TV Tropes notes, the UK HATES MXC and prefers Craig Charles' Gag Dub, while the US HATES the Gag Dub, and often rants about how the UK is supposedly the one that 'ruins' a Japanese show by just talking over the footage rather than outright "dialogue replacement".

There is something to be said for the alternate universe idea MXC started, as I say. I don't hate it for existing, anymore, I just look at it and think 'nice try, but no'. Our 'edit of the edit', when we first made KHE, is closer to how I would have liked to see that alternate universe idea played out. It had a clear(er) attempt at a story to it, and has something resembling proper jokes rather than just dirty remarks every 30 seconds. That's not to say it was perfect, though...

Re: Interview with MXC Co-Creator Paul Abeyta

Here's the thing about MXC.

It wasn't on a big network like NBC or CBS. It was on Spike TV (originally TNN), which is a cable/satellite channel. It was a channel that was aimed at men between 18 and 35. That would account for the show having a lot of double entendre and innuendo. It wasn't meant for UK television, nor was the UK version meant for US television. Not every joke on MXC was dirty, even though half of them probably were. It's still a lot funnier than Wipeout, IMO.

Now, I don't really watch MXC at all anymore. The only episode I can watch is the Monster Special, because in my opinion that's the best episode they ever wrote. If I do watch a random episode, I'll just point out every thing I've seen from the original episodes, and that's no fun.

I like Craig's commentary on the UK version, but it's obvious he doesn't know what's going on in the show except for the basic premise. But like MXC, I don't watch the UK version either for the same reason I don't watch MXC anymore: I have about 90 episodes of the original series. Who needs a voiceover when you have that much?

Also, if it wasn't for me finding MXC on TV a little over a decade ago, I wouldn't even be posting here. The five DVD sets still have a big spot in my DVD collection, right next to the Japanese Takeshi's Castle Volume Two set. I thank MXC for making me a fan of the original show, which I got acquainted through the UK edit, so I also thank the UK version for furthering my interest as well.

I will never say a bad thing about MXC because it is the reason I'm on this forum. This is going to sound really self-important but I've contributed a lot to the Takeshi's Castle world and that never would have happened without MXC. I still think the Vic and Kenny Dynamic is one of the funniest dynamics ever and I think that the Wack Pack vs Hollywood Rehabers is still one of the best episodes in the history of television.

Again if I get enough new questions I will try to interview Mr. Abeyta again. I will give a teaser that atleast one more interview with an MXC alum is on it's way and in that interview there is a great quote about MXC vs Takeshi's Castle. But, you'll have to wait for that.

Again feel free to post this on the main website for Keshiheads or Keshi Kingdom.

I wouldn't say anything bad about MXC either. But, when I watch an episode now, I'll see something familiar and say "I know which episode that clip is from."

I'm going to have to dig out the Season One DVDs and get re-acquainted with it again. There is some good episodes from that season, my favorite being "Porn vs. Construction."

If there's one episode I don't like, it's USA vs. the World. It just plays on dumb stereotypes, and to me is not funny at all.

I'm another one who wouldn't say anything bad about MXC.

Although I remember when it first aired in the UK, I found it very strange...but I was a fan of the UK version and it was different not having Craig Charles's voice there.

But I got in to it very quickly from around episode 3 onwards. The College Girls, and Amusement Parks vs World's Oldest Profession are two of my top favourite episodes.

Since this thread is about MXC, what episode is "Rob Tussin" in? That's the guy who did the backflip and landed on his neck.

Edit: I'm looking for the Takeshi's Castle episode. I know he's in the 1st MXC episode.

Thanks! emoticon

Actually, it's episode 91. Episode 94 was filmed on a rainy day.
