It wasn't meant to have any effect. It's just a replacement for the whole section that was dedicated to any new members who might want to introduce themselves.

Re: Knock Knock - For New Members

Hi everyone!

I've been a frequent visitor to this place for a while (I first started around the time of million family on KHEXtra), but never got round to signing up for the forum and saying hello. 大変お待たせいたしました!I'm a big fan of your work (particularly anything monkeeeee-related :-D ), and thanks to keshiheads I have a profound interest in Japanese TV, old MoMusu stuff and general gameshow-based mucking about :-).

But I digress, what I wanted to post here was that, partly thanks to keshiheads, for quite some years now I've been studying Japanese (I ended up living there for a while!), and I'm a translator, so please do let me know if there's anything you need turning into English (or Japanese :-) ). I'd love to help out if I can!

So, thanks for all the fantastic Japanese TV moments, knitted presenters, plastic ball traps on the stairs, suit-wearing androids and sports-bra based hilarity! I've enjoyed every second :-). Hope I can be of some use to you in the future!

All the best,

-Gra

Hi Gra!

Wow!! I am always really surprised when I hear that someone has been lurking around for so long. Surprised, but very happy and grateful emoticon The fact that you've watched and enjoyed everything we've done/shows we've introduced on here makes it even better. Thank you for being such a longterm visitor!.. Even if it did take you all these years to sign up emoticon

You've become a translator? That's awesome. I wish I had more time (and concentration!) to learn Japanese better. I'm still doing it, veeeery slowly. Give me another 20 years and I might get there emoticon

I've been thinking about creating a new Japanese TV-related series for well over a year now (think Sushi TV x that ABCD quiz that used to be in KHouTube, if you saw it), but I'm always putting it off because it'd take a lot of work to do myself. However if it's something you think you'd be interested in helping out with at all just let me know and I can give you more info. Would be great to work with others on something. Still just an idea really, but you never know..!

Anyway, thank you for signing up - great to hear from you at last emoticon

A pain is one word for it! emoticon
It's putting together sentences that I can't get my head around. I think you really do need a proper teacher for stuff like that. Self teaching doesn't seem to work for me beyond learning words and kanji... Damn kanji! I knew loads a couple of years ago, but becuase I stopped revising them I've forgotten most of what I did know. I often see ones that I know I knew, but just can't rake it out from the back of my brain.

Cool! It's still not really much more than a (longterm) idea - I just don't know if I'll have the time to do it - so I won't post about it here to stop anyone looking forward to something that might not happen haha. I'm PM you more info emoticon

Hahahaha, I'm pretty sure I likened it to 'trying to force a watermelon into one's ear' at a couple of points emoticon

I was lucky to have a good teacher, there's no way I could've taught myself! That's amazing, Dan emoticon. I do remember seeing a textbook called 'Minna no Nihongo', which is all written in Japanese but you can get translation and grammar notes in any language to explain how things go together, if you're interested in brushing up on the rules emoticon .

Ahhhh, Kanji! emoticon I have exactly the same problem. Not using them means they just disappear emoticon . Hahaha, although thankfully we're not alone - a lot of Japanese people made exactly the same complaint to me while I was over there - also didn't Mari and Haruki (Or was it Haruku? Either way he was, in truth, *removes sunglasses* Gekidan Hitori!) struggle to remember Kanji when they had a test sprung on them? emoticon . I've seen all kinds of weird and wonderful ways of memorising them though, from mountains of flash cards to a guy who used to write them in the air with his hands, like an orchestra conductor, while he was out walking his dog. It does seem to be the case that more exposure to them helps though, so there's one strategy that's sure to work - more Japanese TV! emoticon

Cheers for the PM too - it sounds like a great idea! emoticon

That's sounds about right emoticon

I've used a couple of apps to learn kanji and words. The kanji one was quite expensive and took over a year to get through, but it worked... Until I stopped revising it and forgot them all! That's the trouble - learning and revising becomes a chore, and you get less and less motivation to do it. It's all down to how much you can persevere and clearly I'm not much good at that lol.

The word-learning app is actually in the form of various games, so it's a bit better than just straight-out studying. I still do that one most days to learn and revise. Although, again, I'm getting a bit slack with it recently. emoticon

Haha, it was probably Mari forgetting her kanji! I don't remember that test, but there are old shows featuring Morning Musume where they'd give them kanji tests and there were always a few who were useless!
LOL at the guy waving his hands around to memorise kanji. Yeah I don't think I'll try that method... emoticon
