I watched the first season of Formula E and never understood why they introduced the fan boost. That concept is worse than Mario Kart's "Oh you're in first place. Here take a banana or coin"-concept.

Except for the actual design. Beijing's track design is just terrible.

I know this will be only relevant to those of us who live in the UK, but what do you guys think of the BBC losing the free-to-air television rights of F1 to Channel 4?

Re: Formula 1, anyone?

I've always found the BBC's coverage to be a bit dull, so I'm excited to see someone else have a go. Especially Channel 4. Many of my sporting memories as a kid come from Channel 4 rather than either BBC or ITV, so I'm looking forward to it. I hope we get an awesome ident based on their recent rebrand where they broke up the blocks of the old logo. Those new 'elemental' blocks are just begging to be assembled into a car. Since cost cutting was the reason ITV gave F1 back to the BBC in the first place, I was confident they wouldn't go for it, especially as they already have Formula E both live and in highlights form, and the WRC in highlights form. My first thought as soon as the rumours first broke that BBC were looking to get out of their split deal with Sky was that Channel 4 might be an option, as I was so sure that it wouldn't be ITV. Channel 4 even broadcast this year's Race of Champions, which they never did before, so that was probably a test to see if anyone would go for big name motorsport on the channel. Maybe it rated well. What is also notable is that, rather than negotiate a totally new deal, Channel 4 has 'merely' picked up the remainder of the split deal with Sky where BBC are leaving off. Also a bit cheeky for Channel 4 to describe their keeping the live action ad free as a first in commercial terrestrial broadcasting. Technically that only applies to F1 itself rather than motorsport in general, as ITV have been running live coverage of Formula E ad free since day one. How many more years will it be considered a novelty to describe the action as 'ad free', though?

I'm also hoping for a thumping good theme tune, rather than that monotonous dirge the BBC has used since the 70s, which I despise so much I won't even namecheck it. F1 needs big bombastic fanfare for a theme tune, not slow guitar strums. Sky got it right by pinching Just Drive off them, and ITV's from 2000-2002 was the best of them all for me - Blackbeat by Apollo 440. Or any of the video game themes. They'll do as well. As for presenting, please no more robots like Jake Humphrey, or blatant 'something for the dads' fodder like Suzi Perry like BBC had. Come back Jim Rosenthal, I still miss you! You're wasted commentating on celebrities herding sheep and ducks. That said, I'll try to put up with whoever they get, just as long as Ben Edwards is still lead commentator. F1's second greatest commentator for my money. You don't need to ask who the first is.

Yeah, I agree with most of what you've said. I didn't think Channel 4 had any interest in F1, to be honest (and yes, I know they tried to get the rights a few years ago but failed). It's definitely going to take a while for me to get used to seeing F1 on there.

Even though I thought ITV would get the rights, I think it's great that Channel 4 will have something completely different for them to show, rather than the endless re-runs of Big Bang Theory and The Simpsons at the weekends.

I don't hate Ben Edwards, but I'm just not a fan of his commentary. I think it would be fantastic if they got former ITV F1 commentator James Allen to be a part of Channel 4's F1 team. I'm sure some of the BBC F1 guys will jump ship too.

I don't really know what Formula 1 is but that is such a great analogy that I completely understand what you mean!

This made me remember that Butterflies and Hurricanes was the theme to F1 2005 and I went all gooey at the knees.

"Some things have to remain." No they don't, not when the thing in question is a boring droning piece of crap. Fleetwood Snoozefest is staying as the theme tune. NOOOO! I want Apollo 440 back! After all the high hopes I had for you guys... now you can go to hell, Channel 4. emoticon

Let me remind how this topic started:

Any motorsports fans here?

I have for few years had annual F1 game at Anything Goes (which I recently took over). We could use a new player or two.
Basically, you pick a driver before each GP (or keep the one you've last chosen) and get as many points as he does.

There's also a separate one-shot Season Start Game where we guess number of things about this season and then see in November who was right.

Well, the annual Anything Goes F1 Game is on again, already for 8th year. (Rules change more or less every year, but that's kind of fitting on the subject...)

This year there's a secondary "Passive Game" for which you choose three drivers from different teams. you'll then have those three alternating through season.

(If participating only the Passive Game, your score also counts as result in the regular Game.)

I'll accept a post here - 3 drivers from different teams plus optionally a driver choice (or two or more, in which case you'll have those alternating through season or until you make a new choice) for the main game - as participation.

Got a little complicated, but for minimal participation post three drivers from different teams and I'll tell how you did at end of November.

I'll go all German for the passive game.

Nico Rosberg, Sebastian Vettel and underdog pick Pascal Wehrlein.
