Well, it's official: Bottas moves to Mercedes, Massa continues another year at Williams and Wehrlein drives Sauber.

Going to be helluva season (for Finns, especially).

My sister's dead chuffed that we'll still be seeing Felipe Massa after all. It worked for me last year, so maybe I should do it again this year? Valtteri Bottas for the championship? It would be nice. For the sake of entertainment, we simply cannot afford Hamilton doing it again for the Mercedes Empire. Vettel winning for Ferrari would please me more, though.

Basically, the MiniDrivers podium for Italy 2015 sums up my preseason.

The Scuderia goes ten years without a Drivers Championship this year, and nine without a Constructors (or Manufacturers). Ouch. Worse still in one way, it was his team mate Raikkonen who did it last.

Great job, Sebastian! Single-handedly winning the Nations' Cup! You are so awesome!

In other news, bye bye Mr. E! Sounds good, until we look at the new guys. Chase Carey, a long time employee of Mr Murdoch. F1 is now effectively property of Fox. It's emoticon -ed.

It's officially over for Manor emoticon
Back to 20 car F1.

Now all three teams that entered F1 2010 are gone: Hispania/HRT, Team Lotus/Caterham and Virgin/Marussia/Manor.

Only Marussia/Manor ever managed to get any points (Jules Bianchi 9th in Monaco 2014 and Pascal Wehrlein 10th in Austria 2016) or to win any other team in points (2014 Sauber got no points).

While it's hard to speculate "what if", I have to mention a little told-you-so: 2009/2010 I did criticize the choice of the three accepted applicants (of about dozen). Someone - *cough*Bernie*cough* - seemed to have made sure that only teams committed to buy Cosworth engines would get in, in hopes to bring back competitive non-team engine supplier.
Cosworth dropped out after 2013, no points achieved with their engines after the short return.

Anyways...
F1 is again in the shaky situation of only 10 teams. And Sauber is hanging by a thread. Haas hasn't truly established itself, having only competed one season.
How long will it take before "third cars" are mentioned again? emoticon

On the more optimistic rumors, Stefano Domenicali, now CEO of Lamborghini, says he'd love to work with F1 again.
Lamborghini was engine provider in F1 1989-1993, with best result Aguri Suzuki's third place in Suzuka 1990 (the race where Senna ensured his world championship by colliding with Prost in first corner).

Re: Formula 1, anyone?

Time for the annual Anything Goes Formula 1 Game again!

Real short instructions (for those who just want to be done with this):

Choose three drivers from different teams from the list below.
(just post here or at Anything Goes/Sports/F1 Game 2017 topic)

A little longer version (recommended even to those not really interested):

You may (and should!) also choose separately one or more drivers for the other (part of the) Game (if you want to know what that means, you'll need to read the long explanation below the list).
If you do, I would prefer you choose two (or more) to avoid players ending with same choice - but there's no rule against having same driver all season in Active Game. Also note that these choices are allowed to include both drivers of a team.

If you make no additional choices, the three drivers apply to both Passive and Active Game.

F1 teams and drivers 2017

(6) Kimi Räikkönen 2007

(4) Force India

(7) Sergio Pérez
(23)* *** Esteban Ocon

(5) Williams 1997...

(9) Renault 2005,2006

(9)* Nico Hülkenberg
(18) Jolyon Palmer

(10) Sauber

(22) Marcus Ericsson
(19)* Pascal Wehrlein

Full rules explanation:

There are actually two games (which are in fact added together for the absolute annual championship of AG F1 Game).

The Passive Game is simple: you just choose three drivers before season starts - I added the rule "of different teams" to avoid players making exactly same choices too likely - and those alternate as your driver, one for each race. You get the amount of points that driver get (in official final F1 results; this means for example that if half points are awarded from a stopped race, those are also our Game points). If the chosen driver isn't racing, your next choice will be applied; this even in event of driver leaving F1 entirely mid-season. If a chosen driver switches team, he still remains as your choice.

The Active Game - traditionally known as "Free (Choice) Driver" game - has the idea that players choose a driver before each GP. Since there hasn't been many players to follow through whole seasons on this, I first added the rule that whenever you haven't made a new choice you keep the previous choice. Later I've extended this to possibility to choose one or several drivers (to alternate similarly to Passive Game) straight at the start of season. Like in Passive Game, scoring simply follows the actual F1 drivers' championship points.

If a player participates Passive Game but not separately Active Game, The Passive Game score counts also for Active Game. Players may also participate Active Game without participating Passive Game.

Besides Active and Passive Game, the annual championship (aka Total Game) is decided by awarding points from final positions on each game at end of season points similarly as F1 scoring for each race (25/18/15/...)

For anything else in this game, I'm the judge, jury and executioner (of scoring and rule interpretations).

Small print

To increase participation, I'm this year adding rule that when possible, choices of players who have participated in previous seasons but have not now (before season start) posted any choices will have their last played season's choices used, if any of those drivers are still available.

Okay last year I went for drivers I'd heard of, so this year I'll go for drivers I've never heard of!

Daniel Ricciardo, Sergio Pérez, Daniil Kvyat

Also chose two of those because they have the same/similar name as me emoticon

For the other game, I'll go fooor...

Esteban Ocon, Jolyon Palmer

That's some colorful choices... couple more players like that and I'll really have work keeping score emoticon

The first week of tests showed most teams in pretty much same positions as last season.
McLaren-Honda may be having problems.

Re: Formula 1, anyone?

Yeah, the oil tank and the car having a complete failure was what had been causing issues for McLaren during days 1 and 2 of the first pre-season test, but the team did manage to get some mileage in days 3 and 4. Honda felt sorry for Alonso and Vandoorne not getting the amount of testing that McLaren wanted, but I do hope they'll have a better second test this week.

Now I'll talk about each team and their car for this season:

Mercedes - Still the team to beat (not surprisingly). Lewis Hamilton's new teammate, former Williams driver, Valtteri Bottas seems to have settled in fine with the Silver Arrow. For once, I like the look of their car, the W08, which has a really nice paint job. The only thing I don't like about the car is the thing on the engine cover called the T-wing (which I hope gets banned because it looks silly). Will they walk away with another constructors championship? Probably.

Red Bull - It looks like RB's engine supplier Renault have made a step forward with their engine, but Daniel Ricciardo had a sensor issue with the RB13 early on in testing, but despite that, they looked fine. Mobil1 and Esso, former fuel/oil supplier of McLaren, switched to Red Bull this year, replacing long-time partner Total. The young sensation Max Verstappen remains with the team (not surprisingly) after a fantastic first grand prix win in Spain last season.

Ferrari - No change in the driver line-up again as four-time world champion Sebastien Vettel lines up with 2007 champion Kimi Raikkonen. Does the Italian team have the pace with the SF70H to get closer to the Mercs? So far so good in terms of pre-season testing, but we won't know for sure until the season gets under way later this month in Australia.

Force India - Former Manor racer and one of Mercedes' junior drivers, Esteban Ocon, replaces the Renault-bound Hulkenberg at the Silverstone-based squad alongside Sergio Perez. The team had an amazing season last year, and they hope to build on that success with the VJM10. Can't deny that from a top-down view, the livery makes the car look a bit like the 2014 McLaren. Some say there's too much silver on the Force India this year, but I'm not bothered by it.

Williams - Canadian rookie Lance Stroll makes his F1 debut alongside the experienced Brazilian Felipe Massa, who came out of his retirement early to replace Mercedes-bound Bottas due to last year's champion Nico Rosberg's unexpected retirement from the sport. Stroll hasn't had a great start to his F1 career during the first pre-season test in the FW40, but Massa showed that he's still got what it takes.

McLaren - Already talked about the problems that the Woking-based team has had in pre-season testing, but I'm looking forward to see how 2015 GP2 champion Stoffel Vandoorne gets on in his first full season in F1 after making his debut in Bahrain, alongside two-time champion Fernando Alonso. It's nice to see a new livery on their 2017 challenger, the MCL32, but I don't know why they have a bit of white on the side pods. The start of Honda's new partnership with the team in 2015 was painful to watch, but they did a better job last year. Castrol replaces Mobil1 and Esso as fuel/oil supplier.

Toro Rosso - Wow, what a good looking car. We knew they were going to have a new livery on the STR12, but I didn't expect it to look as good as it does. The small Italian team return to Renault power after using a year-old Ferrari engine last season. Carlos Sainz remains in the driving seat with Daniil Kyvat as his teammate, who had a troubled season in 2016.

Haas - The surprise of 2016, the newest team on the grid retain Romain Grosjean, where he is joined by ex-McLaren and Renault driver Kevin Magnussen who replaces Esteban Gutierrez. The VF17 has a darker look than its predecessor, but the team's lack of sponsors on the car is a bit worrying.

Renault - Former Force India driver Nico Hulkenberg joins the Enstone-based squad, driving alongside Jolyon Palmer, who made his grand prix racing debut with the French manufacturer last year. The RS17 is obviously a better car than the rush job they had in 2016. Castrol replaces Total as fuel supplier.

Sauber - Sweden's Marcus Ericsson has a new teammate at the Swiss squad in the form of ex-Manor driver and the other Mercedes junior, Pascal Wehrlein. A new livery for the team's car for this season, the C36, but they will struggle as they continue to run last year's Ferrari engine.

Got agree about the new TR colors, looks great - even if it straight from Red Bull can.

I wonder about Stroll, was it just rookie having hard time or is some of the fault in the new Williams?

Haas keeps surprising, I was kind of expecting them to be in worse shape than they seem to.

Anyways, we'll see if next four days change our ideas...

A week left to (fully) participate this year F1 Game emoticon

Anyone else from KH besides DuffDan and rsmcc playing?
For minimum participation, choose three drivers from different teams and you're set for whole season (if you don't care to get further into it).
