This is almost as bad as wishing Elisa Lam a happy birthday.

Since Comcast took over Sky last year, I've been reading stories that Sky plan to cut their linear channels in the future. Could Challenge be up for the chop judging by its current state?

One of the main reasons Challenge has struggled in the recent years is that they cut the budget. All the money they spent has gone to buying rights to The Chase from ITV. The best era of Challenge under Sky was in mid 2011-2015/early 2016 when it was showing alot of classic game shows from the pre-Millionaire era like Blockbusters, 3-2-1, Bob's Full House, Going For Gold, Fifften to One, Countdown and kids shows like Fun House, Finders Keepers and Knightmare. They also had alot of original and exclusive output like two game show commissions the reboot of Blockbusters and Timeline, non-game shows like TNA, Wrestle Talk TV and Videogame Nation. Oh the social media side of Challenge had interaction during that era.

Challenge ratings have been consistent after launching on Freeview in 2011 and only began to struggle when the the budget was cut and the channel started to feel tired.

The channel must be running on very tight budget at the moment - it is about as commercially viable as some channels sitting around Sky EPG which lack new and exclusive output like Sky's own Real Lives and Sky Two, and probably costing about ten times as much.

What do ScottGamer17 and others think of my observation?

I agree with your observation, ab25170. I've probably said this before, but Real Lives really doesn't need to exist. Surely it could be folded into Pick?

In terms of Sky Two, I get that catch up/on demand is a thing now, but I don't mind that the channel still exists. It can be a handy thing for some people, just like the +1 channels. I know there was a Sky 2 back in the 90s (which was short-lived), but I do remember when the current one started life as Sky One Mix in 2002 (takes me back just thinking about it).

It's no wonder why Challenge keeps acquiring episodes of shows like The Chase: it's down to its popularity. It always does well in the ratings, so I can't entirely blame them for doing so. Having a bit of variety in the schedule wouldn't hurt, though.

What on earth happened to the social media side of things? They just seem to post links about gameshow-related things that don't have anything to do with the channel. It should be used for promoting the shows that they currently air. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't interact with the viewers. Still remember the days when Challenge's website had a forum. When Sky re-launched the channel in 2011, there was going to be a new forum of some sort, but that never materialised.

If you're right about the budget being tight, then it's not particularly surprising that there's no original programming at the moment. To be honest, they haven't exactly been known for that kind of thing in the years that the channel has been on the air.

I won't lie, I still don't know what the future really holds for Challenge. I feel like that I've moved on from the channel, as there's just nothing of interest for me now. Regardless of what happens, we still have our memories of the good old days.

The video of the elevator isn't real, it's a coverup of sorts. Though the whole thing is of course a tragedy that we can only hope to be solved.

BUT: Yay for ab25170 and ScottGamer agreeing for once emoticon

Challenge's social media pages have now become inactive with none of the post from them. They also stopped the promos. Could it be the beginning of the end of the once great channel?

Speaking of no promos on Challenge, the last one a few weeks back was the 10th anniversary of The Chase. Almost ten years ago, the last promo of the Flextech/Virgin era before Challenge last went into decline happened to be another anniversary of the game show, this time a 30th anniversary of Family Fortunes.

I think it can be argued that it feels like Challenge's days have been numbered for quite a while now. If it wasn't for them showing the likes of The Chase and Pointless, then the channel might as well be dead.

I know it sounds strange for me to say this, as I've been a long-time viewer, but there's only one final suggestion from me. If the channel does get to continue broadcasting in the future, then maybe Sky should sell the channel to someone else, but to who?

One potential buyer could be UKTV. I know they only recently sold three of their channels to Discovery, but I think they could do wonders to a channel like Challenge. The amount of original programming on the network has increased in recent years, so just imagine how they can do much better than what Sky has done.

The Weakest Link returns to the channel from mid-September. Maybe it is part of the deal Sky signed with BBC Studios that would see UKTV taking over Challenge.
