Re: Challenge TV

Well, I can't think of one year in particular, but I liked the channel during the 2002-2004 era, which is something I've talked about before here on the Keshi Heads forums. It was the era when I started watching Challenge (hard to believe it's been that long). There was just such a great mixture of shows back then.

Shows I remember being shown from that time include Takeshi's Castle (obviously), Knightmare (which returned to the channel a few years ago), Sushi TV (I'd still love to see a new series, but not necessarily on Challenge), GamesMaster (it was just the first series that was repeated, and it's hard to believe that show turned 25 this year), Fort Boyard, The Desert Forges, Don't Try This at Home, Guinness World Records, I Dare You, Ice Warriors, Kenny vs. Spenny, The Moment of Truth, Oblivious, Outdoor Outtakes, Robotica, TV Bloopers, You Bet (a show I wouldn't mind seeing on the channel again), etc.

I've probably listed these shows before, but it just shows how much of a long-time viewer I really am.

It has been announced that Challenge will be showing The Cube from Monday 31st July at 6pm. I had a feeling that it would air on the channel some day, so yeah, not a bad acquisition. I think it should've been on Challenge years ago, though. Better late than never, I suppose.

Look at them buying something that's not from the 90s.

Re: Challenge TV

If 21st Century Fox takes full control of Sky next year they should improve free to air channels by turning Pick into a bigger and better channel called TV11 (named after Freeview EPG slot), add Real Lives to Freeview and make Challenge into a bigger budget game show channel.

If Sky was to improve Challenge they should revive the old Sky One gaming show Games World and have Lee Mack as the host

I can't see Games World getting revived, to be quite honest. I don't think Pick will change its name, but I agree that the channel needs to improve. Challenge definitely needs more investment from Sky (despite how much of a low priority it is to them, as we all know). The current Real Lives channel needs to be scrapped (which should've happened ages ago), and be replaced by something better (Sky Bravo, perhaps?).

Re: Challenge TV

No way, I'm quite happy for Bravo to stay in the past. I didn't like how it turned from a cult shows channel into a lads culture cesspool. Both it and Fox UK showed/show Adult Swim in name only over here. It doesn't show anime like the US variant does/did, just endless William Street stuff, and I only liked Space Ghost Coast to Coast from that stable. Fox at least showed the final season of Samurai Jack a week after each episode aired Stateside - including the week when Rick and Morty was on all night for April Fools, which made no sense to us over here because it was a week later, killing the joke - but that's it. The money men have made it so Adult Swim only means stuff like Rick and Morty to people over here. Shame.

Challenge has been showing more stuff that I want to see again lately, but there's been a lull, falling back into the old habits of the same two or three series of some shows looping. I laugh though, at the thought that if I do get onto Pointless soon, then after a while I'd be on Challenge at least once a year.

So soon after burning throught Price is Right and Play Your Cards Right after the death of Bruce Forsyth, now another part of my childhood slips away into history as today William G. Stewart died, so Challenge have cleared another Saturday to stack Fifteen to One. He was so famous for that, that'll be all that gets shown, though Family Fortunes had him as a producer in the early years, so I'd give the Bob/Max eps a run out, too. He was producer for the Turkey episode, curtly refusing the Johnsons' begging him to not let that humiliation air. They see the funny side now, but... wouldn't have liked to have been a fly on the wall on that conversation.

Post Fifteen to One, he was one of the 'question readers' - you couldn't call them 'judges' with this format - on the quiz/reality contest hybrid The People's Quiz, and occasionally popped out of hiding for interviews for this, that and the other, and last time he was heard from, he alleged that the BBC refused to let him do Strictly because he was too old for insurance in case he did himself some damage. Brucie was already heading for the exit door, so one wonders...

Fifteen to One it is though, with him, ultimately. My uncle, who appeared twice in his era, said he was pleasant enough, he just looked like a nasty teacher, but we weren't convinced. You always go soft on who you remember being on telly in your childhood, though, so I am sad. Many an afternoon was spent with my granny watching that show or Countdown while it was getting dark outside, if there was nothing good on CITV or The Den. (As I've stated before, there was no CBBC in our house, that's for the boring posh kids.)

The theme tune will be stuck in my head this weekend, along with his sign off, another familiar sound.

"We'll be back tomorrow, same time, same place, [sign in to see URL], Channel 4, see you then."

Hm, yeah. I do agree with you about Bravo, but I suppose there is Spike (which is a sort of spiritual successor). In terms of Adult Swim stuff that has aired in the UK, it's a shame that season 3 of Rick and Morty isn't being shown on Fox (didn't help that the strand was at midnight on Thursday nights, but as you said, we got to see the new episodes of Samurai Jack, which was great). Syfy showed some anime films earlier this year. I'm surprised they didn't do a Toonami-style strand, but Viceland has been airing some anime shows recently, so at least that's the closest we're going to get.

That has got me thinking: I wish there was a channel like CNX now (do you remember it?). Hard to believe that it was 15 years ago since it originally launched and 10 years since it was axed (by that point, the channel was called Toonami). I feel that it was ahead of its time (at least when it was CNX and most of the Toonami era before they decided to show live action stuff, which killed the channel in the end). A channel like that would totally work now, as it would be perfect for airing shows from Adult Swim and Toonami. It's something that probably won't happen (sadly), but man, it would be awesome if it was a thing.

Sorry for going off-topic of this forum thread, but yeah, it's sad to hear of the passing of William G Stewart. I'm not surprised that Challenge are going to show back-to-back episodes of Fifteen to One, and as you said, they recently showed a couple of Bruce Forsyth's gameshows after he passed away. I'm aware that William was the guy who brought FF and PIR to the UK, so yeah, he was definitely more than just a quiz show host.

In terms of Challenge itself, I agree that it's been in a lull for a while now. Gladiators is still the only show I currently watch on the channel. I understand from a business point of view why Challenge is the way it is at the moment. They buy shows that they know always do well ratings-wise, hence the lack of variety in the schedule (which is what I feel is killing the channel).

Re: Challenge TV

If Challenge was going to survive, it could become a 50:50 joint venture with ITV because they produce and own library of game shows, FremantleMedia is another candidate becoming Sky's joint partner in Challenge because they do same stuff as ITV except they not a broadcaster. Whoever gets Sky's half share in the game show channel would revamp Challenge and move back to a pay channel on Sky and Virgin. Have lots of long runs of original commissions at primetime and bring back the evening interactive game slot like Prize Time.

Your idea of Challenge having a joint venture with ITV or FremantleMedia doesn't sound bad, but I still don't think making Challenge a pay channel would make any sense. I just don't know if Sky would want to sell off Challenge, to be honest.

I really can't see Prize Time ever coming back, as I feel it would be a gimmicky thing to do these days. Having more original shows on the channel would be great, but seriously, what's the likelihood of that happening?

It has been announced that Challenge is now available to watch via Sky Go and Now TV. Why they didn't do this sooner, I don't know. Better late than never, I guess.
