They'd never be able to live up to the brilliance of our first ten years... emoticon

Re: Challenge TV

It's a love-hate relationship for us here, but I in particular will never truly get sick of Challenge.

I remember when it launched, young me was excited about there being a channel showing only game shows. Yippee! We got Sky 2 years after Challenge's launch and it's been on the favourites ever since.

The early 2000s was when it was at its peak with the 'red' decals. TC took off against all expectations, and we got to experience Japanese stuff that wasn't games or animation as a result, which came in handy just as the internet age really took off and we could go looking for new stuff. This was also the period where Flextech were regularly making their own stuff for Challenge like Defectors. The Gameshow Gods era was great for all the classics I love that disappeared for a while but started to comeback due to popular demand on forums. Ah, remember when forums were the only means of talking to the people there? How many times could one say "Get rid of the poker?!" in one thread?

We learned one of the worst words in the English language during this time: licensing. While it was great to get shows like Blockbusters and Krypton Factor again, they could only be shown in limited runs, which was annoying. Money... That also caused us to lose the oldest Catchphrase series when the Family Channel's company was sucked up by Disney and Flextech got the rest, and the paperwork got lost. The really old stuff i wanted to see, now I was old enough to actually understand what was going on past the flashing lights and the funky music also disappeared, though Sky's money allows those to be picked up again, which is awesome.

The change to Virgin Media was brief and brought more originals such as Take It Or Leave It, It's Not What You Know and Pyramid Game with Donny Osmond. It also saw Ninja appear over here, so thumbs up. I worried we'd lose Challenge when Sky took over, but wrestling was a small price to pay for keeping it.

Takeshi's Castle will always define the network, though. It's so utterly unforgettable, and pretty much saved it from being shut years ago. As my old dad used to say, "I was watchin' that!"

I agree with everything you said, rsmcc.

I'm not going to deny that there's been some questionable things that Challenge has done over the years like showing property shows (the sort of thing you see on the UKTV network's Home channel nowadays, or UK Style as it was known as back in the day), poker (which formed a strand called Player, that eventually became a spin-off channel that didn't last long before it was replaced by Bravo 2), and of course TNA wrestling (which only worked because most people who watched it came from when it was on Bravo before the move over to Challenge due to Bravo's demise).

Anyway, your mention of the success (that was unexpected at the time) of Takeshi has got me thinking. Of course, if it wasn't for Challenge taking what must've been a risk with Takeshi, we probably wouldn't have got to see the likes of Ninja and Banzuke (which I still miss and wished they would've made some more episodes).

Speaking of Ninja and Banzuke, we should really thank the guys over at the G4 network in the US (yes, I know that channel doesn't exist anymore) for their great editing, which made things easier for it to be shown in various countries and not just here in the UK. It's a bit of a shame that Challenge hasn't brought us any other Japanese stuff since. I wish someone revives Sushi TV or something, as there's plenty of footage of shows that could be used.

In terms of original programming on Challenge, Take It Or Leave It was great and It's Not What You Know had an interesting format. Timeline, the most recent original production, looked like something that would've been made years ago.

No posts on this thread since Challenge's 20th anniversary in February. The channel seems to be low priority for Sky and they seem to have lost interest in Takeshi.

Re: Challenge TV

Well, there's simply been nothing noteworthy to talk about Challenge lately. I really hope the channel acquires something good soon, because I don't know whether I'm going to continue watching after the current re-run of Gladiators finishes later this year.

I agree with you about the channel being low priority (same goes for sister channel Pick) at Sky, but we've known that for quite some time. I've still no idea what the future holds, and before you say it, no, your suggestion of making Challenge a premium channel still isn't a good idea. I just don't think that would help matters.

In terms of Takeshi, it does seem very unlikely we'll ever see the recent foreign versions here in the UK. Even if they did get shown, people would just complain by saying things like "it's just not the same as the original Japanese show" or "where's Craig Charles?" (which reminds me of how the Rebooted series was received by viewers when it aired a few years ago).

Yea, Sky might have felt too burned by Rebooted's failure to pick up any other TC derivatives. More Jimified Sasuke when a few more tournaments have passed might be a thing. I'm working my way through Series 7-9 of Strike It Lucky currently. It's funny how they're showing the most recent version of Price is Right, the one with Joe Pasquale, which all the mainstream media and entertainment websites have forgotten, because all of them, when talking about the lastest reboot coming soon with Alan Carr say that he's taking over from Bruce Forsyth, rather than Joe. Guess you're just not famous enough, Joe. emoticon

There must have been way more episodes of The Price is Right with Joe than Bruce, seeing as it was a daily thing! So he's actually the longest serving host, yet no one remembers it.

That's strange, as I do remember the Joe Pasquale era of the show. It was only a decade ago since his series came to an end. What I do find a bit odd about the upcoming Alan Carr version (which I know is only a pilot at the moment) is that it will be airing on Channel 4 rather than ITV, but I suppose with C4 reviving The Crystal Maze with Richard Ayoade (who is taking over from Stephen Merchant who did the one-off celebrity special last year), it does kinda make sense.
