This year's big project for the Turkey, Dustin was on stage in the Autumn (not on tour, sadly for me, it was a residency in one Dublin theatre) in The Comeback Vehicle. A musical written by Eoin Colfer, the author of the Artemis Fowl books. Dustin finds on a Who Do You Think You Are?-style programme that for all the years he's slagged off country folk - 'culchies' - he may have rural ancestry after all! Gasp! Hilarity ensues. nondisclosed_email@example.com (rsmcc)Wed, 30 Oct 2019 01:10:11 +0000 Re: Christmas (Singing) Turkeyhttps://bkeshiheads.runboard.com/p355096,from=rss#post355096https://bkeshiheads.runboard.com/p355096,from=rss#post355096Dan might not see this for a while, so I'll say it for him: That turkey should've been on someone's plate last month nondisclosed_email@example.com (Messup434)Sun, 16 Dec 2018 05:50:44 +0000 Re: Christmas (Singing) Turkeyhttps://bkeshiheads.runboard.com/p355094,from=rss#post355094https://bkeshiheads.runboard.com/p355094,from=rss#post355094And for this year, filling in the 'blanks' in this list: Christmas in Dublin, the B-side to 32 Counties, from 1999. Apart from last year's Xmas single, and unexpectedly being one of the judges for Ireland's selection contest for this year's Junior Eurovision, Dustin has been semi-retired for the last couple of years. I thought it was because his puppeteers had called it quits, but it was actually because they were relaunching Zig and Zag in Ireland. They had a primetime show called Zig and Zag's Superbloopers, which was just one of those 'let's all laugh at YouTube fails' shows, long after they stopped being all the rage, and was basically an extended plug for their own 20th anniversary DVD a few years ago. Which I bought, obviously. The animated series began this year on RTEjr, then a few months later was picked up by CBBC for UK broadcast. It was amusing for me to see the contrast in the print media; in Ireland, it was like 'OMG Zig and Zag! Remember The Den?! 2phat?! The singles?! Great!', in Britain it was more like 'OMG Zig and Zag... The puppets you annoyed your parents with. Now they're the cartoon characters your kids are gonna annoy you with. Enjoy.' nondisclosed_email@example.com (rsmcc)Sun, 11 Dec 2016 22:52:23 +0000 Re: Christmas (Singing) Turkeyhttps://bkeshiheads.runboard.com/p343890,from=rss#post343890https://bkeshiheads.runboard.com/p343890,from=rss#post343890Zig and Zag are still a thing? nondisclosed_email@example.com (DuffDan)Sun, 11 Dec 2016 09:39:31 +0000 Re: Christmas (Singing) Turkeyhttps://bkeshiheads.runboard.com/p343866,from=rss#post343866https://bkeshiheads.runboard.com/p343866,from=rss#post343866Nearly that time, again. It's been 20 years since Dustin's first No. 1. This wasn't it, coming a couple of years earlier, from Zig and Zag, who came back this year with an animated series. Lol. It's probably the "please, take all my money and do whatever you want to do, but please don't stop singing" kind of single. But I would think it's cool, too, if I grew up with any up these puppies. Well, the reunion is cool, not so the fact that there isn't enought funding for childen TV anymore. Something that can't happen in Germany. They have an idependent commission who checks the demands of the public broadcasters and ultimately decides how much money they get to fulfill their public task. Having politicians deciding the budget is against constitution, as politicians aren't allowed to influence programming decisions and deciding about the budget is influencing programming. So all problems our many public broadcasters face are: still spending more money than they have and getting more money every fews, but not as much money as they wanted to get. And the need to spend so much money on administration, pensions and everything but programming itself. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Codex89)Thu, 11 Dec 2014 21:06:56 +0000 Re: Christmas (Singing) Turkeyhttps://bkeshiheads.runboard.com/p329962,from=rss#post329962https://bkeshiheads.runboard.com/p329962,from=rss#post329962Well that was a... uh... something different. He's back, after six years. Along with Zig and Zag, and legendary Irish puppet Bosco, plus a new one from the current generation of kids characters on RTE, Pajo. Seriously, though, this is major. The Irish version of Childline faces closure due to to government cuts, and this cover of We All Stand Together has been hastily produced to raise funds to save it. Disgusting that this is even a thing, but that's politics for you. It's nice to see Dustin, Bosco and.. yeah, I suppose Zig and Zag... back on our screens together for the first time in donkey's, as they've done solo stuff in the last few years. nondisclosed_email@example.com (rsmcc)Tue, 09 Dec 2014 01:06:49 +0000 Re: Christmas (Singing) Turkeyhttps://bkeshiheads.runboard.com/p314991,from=rss#post314991https://bkeshiheads.runboard.com/p314991,from=rss#post314991It should be worth knowing that Eurovision 2008 was in Serbia, and as they won the 2007 contest with a serious ballad and tried to win it again with a serious ballad, pretty much every entry that wasn't 100% taking it seriously was booed to oblivion.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Oni91)Mon, 19 Dec 2011 19:28:27 +0000 Re: Christmas (Singing) Turkeyhttps://bkeshiheads.runboard.com/p314988,from=rss#post314988https://bkeshiheads.runboard.com/p314988,from=rss#post314988Quote:rsmcc wrote: And that is a potted history of Dustin the Turkey as a novelty record maker. We haven't had all the singles, but they're not all there. The Christmas B-side to 32 Counties, Christmas in Dublin, was a festive parody of the song Summer in Dublin. The one for Sweet Caroline was a rewrite of Hey Baby by DJ Otzi, called Hey Santa. I don't think that one got a video, those two songs were the only new material on the fifth ablum, Dustin's Greatest Hits, with the rest being a compilation of songs from the previous four, hence the title. Album 6, the last one to date, was released in 2005, and saw Dustin team up with Chris de Burgh of Lady in Red fame to cover Chris' own song Patricia the Stripper. That got to No. 3, with a whole new song for the B-side, True Christmas. Which finally brings us up to date. And this is what Ireland unleashed on the continent in the summer of 2008. Some countries got behind it in the build up, others were totally bemused, others just ignored it altogether. Failing to progress beyond the semi-final stage, I give you Dustin the Turkey's entry into the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest, Irelande Douze Pointe. And here's how it looked on the night of the semi-final... Honestly? I preferred the video. Some booing, but they're 'it's not real, it's a disgrace' snobs who need to lighten up a little. It's all a bit of fun. They're a minority anyway, as I said, most people either were bemused or just plain ignored him. I'd sooner trust those that ignored him in that case. There were a lot worse than a puppet that year. See Spain. If you dare. And that is a potted history of Dustin the Turkey as a novelty record maker. I like Dustin, and I also like Hugo the Troll, aka Hiudai. But which is better? There's only one way to find out... RIP OFF HARRY HILL!
