Christmas (Singing) Turkey

Well, as Xmas draws near, my thoughts turn to a certain turkey's music career. In the 90s, as all the top pop acts sought the Christmas No. 1 in the UK, in Ireland they were more interested in Dustin. I'm counting down to the big day this year with a different Dustin song, starting with his first major outing, as a guest with Zig and Zag (remember them?) on their hit, "The Christmas No. 1".

Lol, Zig and Zag. Whatever happened to them?
That was also the worst music video ever. I hope that was the point of it.

They've scuttled back to Ireland lately, releasing a DVD in 2009 marking 20 years since their first TV appearance on Dempsey's Den, as it was then, and last year hosting a weekly radio show on 2FM. Not sure how that was supposed to work, to be honest. emoticon

After they went off to Channel 4, Dustin took up the mantle of releasing Christmas records. This was his first 'solo' No. 1, but it's really anything but, as it also features on vocals the late Ronnie Drew, of one old Irish folk band, The Dubliners, and the whole of another band, The Saw Doctors.

I give you Dustin's version of the (very) old folk song Spanish Lady.

Next!

Each release had a 'B-side' which was themed around Christmas. Alongside Spanish Lady was Numb, a parody of a U2 song of the same name with lyrics re-written to make it about the holidays.

And yes, the burping and farting noises are 'his'. It's a running joke of his.

Hope I don't give anyone nightmares then. emoticon

Now, this is the one that every news agency fell over themselves to put up on their website, as if to say "Oh my God, a puppet sang with HIM?", when Dustin was selected for Eurovision in 2008. When people questioned why Ireland had selected a puppet, we showed them this to show that he's actually a multi-chart-topping artist, so it's not like we got up one morning and said "you know what would be funny? If we sent a puppet to Eurovision".

From his second album, and with Sir Bob Geldof no less, Dustin performs Rat Trap, a cover of the hit song from Bob's Boomtown Rats days.

The Christmas B-side was probably Dustin's second most well known song. This made world headlines for almost being Ireland's Christmas No. 1 when in most other countries it was 2 Become 1 by the Spice Girls.

Christmas Tree was a festive parody of the song Lemon Tree by Fool's Garden.

It was almost number one? Does that mean it was the Spice Girls after all? Even though he is Mr Scary Turkey I'd have preferred him to have the top spot!

Nearly. It had been No. 1 at the beginning of December, but they beat him in the end. Probably helped by the fact that he was actually knocked off the top by Breathe by Prodigy. Maybe everyone then panicked and thought "We can't have that as the Christmas No. 1! Get the Spice Girls, quick!". It's funny, as I got the album (Dustin: Unplucked) for Christmas on tape. While my sister got... take a guess. emoticon

It went the other way a few years later. Remember in 2000 when Bob the Builder took the honours in the UK? In Ireland it was Stan by Eminem and Dido. emoticon

Thank God, I hear people cry.

Actually, Codex might find this funny. Following Dustin's increasing success at Christmas, TG4 - TnaG as it was then - decided the following year that Hugo - yes, him bursting out of my profile over there <<< - should release one. I wish I could show you that as well, called Get Out Of That Chimney Hiudai! But unfortunately I can't find it anywhere. It didn't trouble the Top 30 though. It peaked where it entered at 34. "Nollaig '98", performed with Brendan O'Carroll, now known in the UK for Mrs. Brown's Boys on BBC1, did even worse, don't even remember where that ended up. Hiudai/Hugo gave up after that.

Bob the Builder was better.
