Re: Hugo

lol at his aceptance speech.

Here is a presentation video from ITE, also showing two seconds from the Irish version. You also got to see some backstage stuff, the tech stuff behind the German version was a bit more complex though, because they animated a full character, not just faces.

Edit: found a behind the scenes clip from the German version

Re: Hugo

Ooh that's cool. I'd never have thought they animated him live with a real person. I'd have thought it was preprogrammed!

Re: Hugo

Somebody uploaded a better "behind the scene" clip. You can see the host sitting in a blue box, completely alone without anything else but a blue cube where she could sit. You also see the guy who spoke Hugo for a while and the dancer who was reponsible for the live animation.

Re: Hugo

Ah, I see. So that's how they managed to get them to be in the same space with Hugo, rather than him in the screen all the time. I thought some sort of blue screen device was in use but I could picture how they could be done together. TG4 did that relatively late compared to other broadcasters, as far as I can see. It wasn't until 2000 that they did away with the screen, which was when the actual game show itself was cancelled, and Hiudai was restricted to doing the links in between the programmes on the kids programmes strand. For a while they didn't even have a human presenter, the entire kids block was presented by Hiudai himself. Wonder if that was done anywhere else?

Re: Hugo

It must have been quite hard for the person animating Hugo and the man doing his voice to match up with each other. Neither really knew what each other would say or do, yet the voice and actions had to match! It's all very clever though.

It was difficult for the hosts, too. If you see Hugo on the right of the TV screen, it means that he's actually on the presenter's left hand side. I read that the hosts had problems with that, so during the first months using the 3D Hugo they actually mirrored the TV screen in the studio, so that they don't look to the wrong side.

Germany had something similar in 1997, when they did that stuff in Sculla's/Scylla's/Hexana's castle. It aired inbetween the cartoons, but there were never really mentioned on air. But they still played games, so I guess that the Ireland was quite unique there.

Which movie do you mean? There hasn't been one. They actually planned one called Hugo and the Diamond moon, the story was already written, pictures for the storyboard were drawn, but for some reason they never finished it.

They had a TV series called Hugo Safari, which was some sort of documentary for younger audiences featuring Hugo who tells his kids storys that his grandfather told him about his adventures in the wild.

Re: Hugo

You're thinking of the wrong Hugo. This "Hugo" is a video game character.
