Re: Countdown

Does this slot change come as a surprise to anyone? It was obvious from the off that 7pm was a stupid time for it. Countdown really isn't a 7pm-type show.

Meanwhile on new Countdown they've just had another young Octochamp who swallowed a dictionary and came up with words no one had ever heard of. I get fed up of these types of players. It's totally unfair to any 'regular' opponent who comes up against them as they stand no chance.

I finally gave up on Deal a few months ago. I can't say I've watched it properly for years, but always had it in as background noise. Now I can't even be bothered to do that.

Thing is, I don't care when they're on, as long as they are on. That's what having Sky+ for 10 years does to you. It has numbed me to idea of slots to a degree, though I would still rather have Countdown and Fifteen to One on an hour later, though. I still encourage long words; nice to learn something new. That said, it should be done for the fun of it, not being massively competitive and aggressive with it, weaponizing the long words, or "swallowing a dictionary", as you put it, Dan. As I've said before, nothing wrong with that as long as they're not a jerk about it. Slightly soured the 30th anniversary as they had several such players around that time who were arrogant about it, and at least one having a hissy fit about losing. Not on, lads.

Re: Countdown

I hardly ever watch anything as they're being broadcast either, but then 25 year old Countdown isn't exactly something you're going to record is it!? That IS something to watch when it's on becuase you have nothing else to do. But not many people are going to do that at 7pm, as they've found out.

What irritates me even more about these guys who come up with ridiculous words no one's heard of is that sometimes they themselves don't even know what they mean or even how to pronounce them. So, they don't actually know the word at all do they. It's just robot-like consumption of strings of letters from the dictionary. That's the closest you can come to cheating on Countdown really. It's a word game, not a memory game.

Maybe making a rule that you have to have some idea of what the word actually means might help a bit. Or only pit these dictionary machines against each other and not against regular players.

Yay emoticon

I don't watch much Countdown now...unless Jimmy Carr, Jon Richardson, and Sean Lock are in it...

Re: Countdown

It's the highlight of every two years! Why does he appear so rarely?

Tim was on a show my sister was working on a couple of weeks ago and apparently no one in the audience laughed at his jokes emoticon He came off stage and said "I'm getting too old for this" emoticonemoticon

The audience were obviously idiots.

Back to Countdown, we've just got rid of another up-themselves weirdo Octochamp. At one point he asked what the scores where so that he knew whether to pick a hard numbers game or not. What a dick. It's Countdown, why take it so ridiculously seriously?

Another time his opponent got the target on the numbers and he didn't (HAHAHAHA) but then he was staring at the man's working out that Rachel had written up - mouthing it as he was reading through it - as if he was trying to find a mistake in it. Arse.

I've been watching through a stack from back in February, and feel so smug because I got a six-small right for the first time! YES! The calendar I got for my room this year is a Countdown one, with a different round and conundrum for every day, so I'm getting better at this.

That's bloody sad emoticon I've been to see him live a few times and the audiences I've been with have been fantastic.

I remember Eric Idle talking about a time when he and the other Pythons performed some live sketches to complete silence, however they later agreed there's nothing funnier than when the audience don't laugh...I'd find that really awkward and unsettling.

Back to Tim...I'd just say to him ignore the outsiders and concentrate on your fan base who make your tours sold out emoticon

They're just elitists who think comedy is just knob gags and slinging mud at politicians. Nothing beats good old wordplay. We love you, Tim!
