Annoying Roommate
Hey y'all - this is half a rant, half me retelling an amusing (to me anyway) story, so here we go.
To give you an idea of the setup, my dorm has four individual bedrooms (thank God!), two on the left of the dorm, two on the right. The two on the right are far enough away from me and keep to themselves mostly. Then there's my neighboring roommate and I'm just starting to be annoyed by his constant prying, "I'm better than you" type of attitude. To give an idea, he's a sophomore so I think that gives him a bit of superiority in his mind or something. I also think he may not be thrilled to be rooming with a bunch of freshman so that may come into play.
Anyway, this is the one I've already mentioned briefly in Post About Your Day - the midnight frisbee and yelling one. To be fair, the midnight frisbee has only happened once since I've been back and it was more like 11 PM so I appreciated that.
Anyway, this guy's done nothing truly upsetting or offensive, but he's sooooo smug.
This somewhat amused me tonight, but I was cooking pasta and doing pushup sets while it was on the stove and he came in like "Isn't it a little bit late for dinner?" He will always ask stuff like this with a tone of annoyance or something. So I just laughed and was like "Yeah, I got inspired too late tonight". He had me repeat that about five times because he couldn't understand(?) and finally heard and said "Dude it's inspired not aspired". Like I guarantee you I just said inspired five times. If anything, I'd probably say inspire when aspire was appropriate lol. Then he went on to explain the definition of both words and I was just nodding politely then as he got to aspired I kind of jumped in and was like "Yeah, it's when you try to do something". I think it was snippier than intended on my part, but I don't need a lecture on something I already understand!
The fact that I often leave my bedroom door open a crack while I'm working in there during the day also bothers him. There've been multiple times where I'm just working in there and he'll be like "You know you can close the door right?". I know it's hard to understand without hearing the tone firsthand, but he doesn't say it in a lighthearted or fun way.
He's also very smug about school. ALL of my classes are apparently easy and I should have A's in all of them. I said that I had a B+ in one of my classes - Communications and he was like dude that class is so easy, how don't you have an A in it? Literally the weekend before he told me he used Quizlet answer keys on all of the quizzes for the class (they're online, on your own time, which I think is a bad idea anyway as it's a recipe for cheating), so I don't understand how that makes him better than me just trying to do it honestly.
Every day around noon he goes in the bathroom for about half an hour with loud TikToks on blast (which must take so much self-confidence to just do ). I always imagine what if the roles in something like that were reversed - I KNOW if I did that once it'd be commented on for the rest of my existence.
Again, he's not a bad guy or done anything that bad but he's constantly... like this. In some ways I'd rather have a slobby, noisy roommate than a busybody roommate who is working on his double major and into "tHe LaDiEs" (despite also having a girlfriend lol). He's just something else and I thought it deserved it's own topic to be updated
EDIT: A couple more things I've just thought of! On the first day he asked who of us was vaccinated and I made the mistake of being honest and saying "I'm not yet" and explained that my doctor literally told me to hold off on it due to my heart murmur. He's brought it up several times since then and told me I just need to talk to my doctor about it so I can get it... as I said I already did and for now my mind has been made.
He also asked if I use preferred pronouns on social media which I certainly don't, but then he started to ridicule the people that do. I don't necessarily do it myself, but why is what others do any of our business, huh? That's a key mindset that he lacks in general

Re: Annoying Roommate
So we had our incredibly fun frisbee outing tonight. At the end he asked did your dad never play catch with you as a kid or something? I was able to honestly say "Not really". And then I said something like yeah I'll stick to Ninja and then he asked how I know I'm good (which is such an awkward question). And I said well I'm not necessarily good but I've practiced at gyms and stuff. He was surprised that there were gyms and I said how they're not extremely common, but there's usually one within driving distance. His opinion on that was "Well that's retar*ed". I really enjoy our talks lol.
I've had friends in the past who poke fun at my ninja stuff (including my best track friends) which was always funny, but this does not strike me as lighthearted at all!

Re: Annoying Roommate
Aw well I appreciate that! I don't even think he thinks I'm bad, he just finds the whole thing stupid (well, clearly ).
By some weird coincidence, I went with him to get algae from pet stores around town last week, and I was making my quick visit on here and he looked over and asked me what it was. I was confused because I didn't realize he was talking about my phone but then I explained that it's just a website to talk about shows like Ninja Warrior (slightly easier to explain than Takeshi's Castle). He didn't respond to that, which I suppose is better than the likely alternative!

Re: Annoying Roommate
Well one of my other roommates just got scolded for being too noisy. Glad it's not just me then, but I feel worse when it happens to other people! I mean I'm a nightowl a lot of the time so maybe I would understand this issue better if I actually slept at night lol, but he's just so... ugh. The way he says it so bluntly and then slams the door afterward annoys me. People do things that annoy me often (mostly him!) and I don't tend to comment on them.
My other roommate is much nicer (not that I've talked to him much, he's just neutral in my mind ) but a bit clueless and he hasn't quieted at all since he was yelled at. Now I'm bracing for a "second strike" - I don't know why I even care as it's not me but I'm just going to cringe and be annoyed.
Also, the other day he was loudly talking on the phone and from my room I could hear him saying "Well if I get Covid it's not like there's anyone in this dorm I care about anyway" (I think to his girlfriend, who was worried about him partying). While I agree on the surface about Covid (and I'm shocked considering how many times he's asked if I'm vaccinated...), that was a lovely way to put it I'm not at all concerned because I know the stats and I'm relatively young and at least in okay shape, but he makes it sound like he believes there to be a risk but just doesn't care.
I don't like to just slag someone off (believe it or not!), but he's repeatedly given me Karen vibes and said rude things to me, so whatever. I don't like constantly living in fear of being scolded by someone about 8 months older than me and 10 years younger than me in social skills (he is actually really smart academically so can not be faulted there).

Re: Annoying Roommate
Seems like it.
I will say the last ten days I've been there he's been pretty good. As in, not a problem.
Though I bought a pizza from Dominoes because I'm hungry after my runs and I saw him. He was actually nice and I offered him a slice and he said Nah it's your pizza, go ahead. But then the next day he saw me eating peanuts (I think)? And he referred back to the pizza and said I need to be careful to not get diabetes. Possibly petty but since Type I diabetes (which you just get, nothing to do with weight or health) runs in my family the comment irked me. As usual, I didn't show that at all because I'm lame lol and just said something like "Yeah, I know I need to watch out" and laughed.
So now when I get anything to eat from 7-11 I am anxious to run into him. Part of that is me just being dumb and caring too much, and it's not like I actually care about the comments, but I don't like being judged. I just don't get what makes someone feel like caring that much and I guarantee it's not genuine concern about my health. At least I wasn't eating anything "too loudly" this time.
But this is the same person I took a walk with because he had was hungover and then basically listed all of the drugs he's taken. I honestly don't care that much about any of that if he can do it without hurting himself, but then when I'm judged for buying a pizza it gets kind of silly.
