I didn't likethis episode very much. The Northwest thinger was completely unfair.. I mean the fact that the competitors appear to be defying gravity should be enough, right? 0_0

Lmao the ninjas in this episode saw more bars than me on a slower Saturday night roflmao.

Haha, I knew you knew, that's why I was fine with mentioning it as it's only really me, you and miamigirl (who I'm convinced is your meme account as opposed to your grandma lol) who look on here. Will be more careful in future though 🙃

*takes a deep breath*

How do you feel about the Angry Birds now?

The modifications were mostly subtle, but there if you looked. Tightening the bridges on Dangerous Curves was definitely the right move (if only we saw this further down the course emoticon ), and the same goes for Hazard Cones. The Crank It Up variation is to be expected, but decent.

Salmon Ladder is becoming more of a third-wheel these days, but it's fine.
Angry Birds is the stupidest obstacle in the history of obstacles. I was physically mad after watching what it did to everyone. The obstacle would've been acceptable without the backwards grab. It still would've been challenging, but for the unique reason of having oddly-shaped and positioned grips, rather than a near-impossible leap of faith.
Cane Lane would've been really nice to see. I really like the obstacle. Plus, they strengthened the beams for nothing.
Spider Trap is slacking-off. Someone give it a pay-cut.

This was one of the worst episodes ever. I mean, the editing attempted to cover the TWENTY-TWO ANGRY BIRDS FAILS, but there is only so much that can be done. While equally boring, I wouldn't have minded seeing a couple more runs that ended before the Birds, just to add some variety to the course.

I just want to compare this course to the other two Finals courses with new eighth obstacles. In Atlanta, we had Up for Grabs and Fallout, which are both much easier than the obstacle respective to them in Baltimore. Then in Ohio (obstacle spoilers aheademoticon, we got the Slam Dunk and Spinball Wizard. I won't spoil anything about the new obstacle (though it would be hard to beat 0/22 clears!), but Spinball Wizard definitely has a better pass-rate than Cane Lane.

Essentially, I'm saying that the regions this year have been massively unbalanced. I'm also saying that right after they filmed this region, they went and put the Lighting Bolts, Floating Monkey Bars and Northwest Passage in the next region. It's as if they want two weeks with no clears!

That being said, I find it interesting that they chose to swap the ordering of Tacoma and Baltimore, but not swap a region with clears between them. I'm not complaining (as it makes things less predictable - though, at the same time, this episode was the definition of predictable emoticon ), but you would expect them to put Oklahoma before Baltimore, since they already moved two regions around.

I am fully convinced that a rival of the Angry Birds franchise paid to have this monstrosity built, in order to put people off of the movie emoticon But seriously, the obstacle looks ugly however you cut it, especially with the garish background.

The resting spot after the Salmon Ladder was interesting. Wonder if we'll be seeing that again this season.. emoticon

I felt bad for Jamie Rahn, and on a year with a slightly fair eighth obstacle, I bet he would've qualified.

This episode sucked. Let's see what next week brings.

Re: ANW 11

As hinted in an earlier post when I might or might not have revealed a bit too much (can't remember drinking...), I'm angry at some birds (and might I say, not for the first time 😉).

Ok, in all seriousness this episode was a massacre. To give them credit - the editing was actually really good considering the situation, but I do have the usual nitpicks plus a couple more (more on that later).

Modifications, although mostly subtle, definitely helped get more people to the back half.

Cane Lane is a fantastic obstacle now imo lol. I would have liked to have seen it but we may see it again later in the season, the first time I've been fine with seeing it in stage 3.

There of course was the Salmon Ladder and Spider Trap, but the other back-half obstacle seems to have escaped my mind...

Sadly, I'm not going to forget angry birds anytime soon so I may as well talk about it. As you said, the problem was the backwards catch, and without that I think we could have seen probs about a 40-50% clear rate considering a lot of the fails were on that blind catch.

I'm surprised the producers didn't see this coming: in LA we had Leaps of Faith in 9th. Only 2 competitors got past it. Then they decided to put a blind catch obstacle in 8th which was most certainly harder. I'm not quite sure what they thought would happen.

To quote Kevin Brekke (the obstacle's original designer):

'Angry Birds reverse catch is much harder than the ones on Leaps of Faith and SnapBack. This one is closer to you so you have more forward momentum, it is two handholds, it tilts, AND it is thicker so you can’t easily pinch to stop your momentum'

'It’s a bad obstacle
And as the original designer, I feel very confident in saying that'

This should explain it all.

Also, the show made it very clear when they showed a tester on the obstacle that it wouldn't be completed, and again when they gave cane lane it's own fluff piece. Poor editing choices there.

Just a nitpick but they said Alyssa Bierd was the 2nd woman to complete crank it up after Maggi Thorne, but I swear Barclay did it too, meaning Alyssa was the 3rd. Unless they know something we don't...

Like you said Messup, the courses have not been at all balanced. And why did the producers put two unstable bridge obstacles on the same course? And why did they put two brutal bar obstacles on the same course last week? NoNe Of ThIs MaKeS sEnSe!!!!

Better regional next week though (unless they catastrophically mess up the editing like I just did with that spelling lol). Then 4 weeks of Vegas!

Glad I'm not the only one who gets mad at birds emoticon

I'm not complaining about the two Unstable Bridge-type obstacles in the same region (though it is weird) because I kind of like the mindset that the obstacles can be mixed and matched in any way that creates a well-rounded course overall. What can I say, that's one of the reasons I looove Takeshi.

Welp, avoid all of your social media accounts until Monday if you're looking to avoid spoilers on the upcoming episode. And avoid your social media accounts until the end of September if you're looking to avoid spoilers on future eps emoticon

You know what I enjoyed the new episode a little. The angry Birds were lousy. The women to complete the course we're novel. It was amazing probably.

Today I signed up for a paint class. I find it artistic and I am a grandmother in college o. I find it hilarious. Well I did graduate college 50 to 60 years ago o however I m interested to learn new crap. Well anyway I had to do a picture with a partner. He was a man. He was two to three years greater than my age probably. He was not my husband. I find the reassurance hilarious. Well I asked my friend why the hell is the same paint different colors? I find it perplex. He said it has not dried yet. I said sorry i am a first painter o. I find it hugely understandable.

The Angry Birds and women clearing are in two very different episodes. Veeeeery different.

It's time to review our last stop before we hit Vegas - and the stop I was at! Let's see how it all stacked-up.

The Modifications in the first half were somewhat subtle, but definitely there. While the Slingshot required bigger moves, I think having less "stops" always makes obstacles like that easier (like Crank It Up, Sky Hooks and such). The Ring Swing got a hidden variation - the second ring was on a hook with a much lower tip, so unhooking the ring wouldn't be so difficult. Also, I think the Spin Bridge was made less hilly, which is fine.

Salmon Ladder can be boring to watch (as I've said many times this season), but the plus-side is that most people do it quickly!
Slam Dunk is a really good idea, in my opinion. It is interesting to see that the precision grabs and jumps themselves took out a similar amount of competitors (and that was indeed the case in real-life). This obstacle was a nail-biter, while not having a terribly low pass-rate, which is refreshing. Originally there was a sixth cradle to jump to, but it was removed (it was almost directly above the edge of the platform and may have been overkill anyway).
Spinball Wizard seems an odd choice for this position, but I like it as an obstacle. I feel like the first "wishbone" is the most tricky to maneuver now (since it rotates), but I can't remember if it was always like that. Also, it was easier to see on-set, but the first four holds were going at a slight uphill grade, and the fifth one was a bit lower than the fourth. Again, don't know if this has always been the case.
Spider Trap hasn't had nearly as much of a spotlight this year as I originally expected, and it was actually refreshing seeing people finally get to it again! There were a couple of runs that cut it close at the top, which was fun.

Power Tower was the first one I ever saw, so it has a special place in my heart. Also, it was a very good race to watch live (especially compared to other Finals races).

WE HAD TWO WOMEN CLEAR!!! The hype was very real for this when we were there, and I was jumping and yelling like I've never done before when Michelle reached the Spider Trap. So was the guy next to me, but to an even greater extent. emoticon Her making it up there was a great moment, which, to be brutally honest, didn't come across as such on TV.

First, saddling her with a depressing story seemed an odd move since her run itself was so notable. Plus, as I expected, American Ninja Warrior had to "leak" her run days before broadcast. I don't know about the ninjas, but if that happened to me, I would feel a bit short-changed. Whatever, the moment itself was amazing, and how fitting it was that the second woman up the Wall is the second to clear City Finals (behind the first woman up the Wall!).

Jesse's clear was also hugely exciting in-person, but much less-so on the show. To be honest, it was pretty obvious she would clear the course since they showed Michelle so far before her. This was kind of an unavoidable situation in the editing process, but I do think it would've helped to save Michelle, Jeri and Jesse for the second half, and showing them in that order. That way, the first female clear wouldn't be until a bit later-on, and Jesse's clear might not feel quite as predictable after Jeri falling earlier.

On a silly note, since we're talking about Jeri, as her profile ended and it cut to her run, I was saying "At least it's not about her Dad playing the drums." Literally as I was saying the last word, it went to a closeup of her Dad playing the drums. It was just accidental comedic timing, but to an impressive degree. emoticon And I was amused by the "embarrassing Dad" storyline last year, so I'm not bullying!

This week was definitely a huge turn of tide in the way of results. I think it is safe to say that producers wanted this course to be beaten - and they sure got their wish! The front half seemed to be equally as dangerous as the back, really. There has been speculation that there was originally something new instead of the Ring Swing planned for Cincinnati (especially seeing as its return after a season off is an anomaly and this course is short by one new obstacle), but the producers decided to stick with an easier challenge to ensure that this course wasn't the third in a row to go unbeaten. I also firmly believe that the Baton Pass was planned to be the ninth obstacle before the Baltimore/Tacoma fiasco.

Having the first run this week make it farther than the best run last week felt really odd - and really does showcase a discrepancy between courses. Luckily, this time the better of the two results aired second, so it felt like a good thing! I think the first two (definitely first run) made it to the ninth obstacle in real life, as well!

That brings us to another interesting point: Phillip! American Ninja Warrior actually started the episode off with the real first runner of the night, and it was great to see him get some airtime! I was really afraid he would get the usual cut treatment, so seeing him with such an important role was amazing! emoticon (Yes, I know him from Sasuke Maniac Forums, I'm not just being insane..)

We were let in to the set as Pavoni was running, and I was actually standing next to the Spinning Bridge as he did his scorpion. The medical team was pretty concerned. Then we followed Jeri down to the Warped Wall, and waited underneath the hosting booth for a couple of runs, before ending-up at Slam Dunk.

It was good to see Grant finally scrape by and make it to Vegas. I wasn't completely aware of this, but apparently things looked really grim for him and he thought he was done-for after he fell, but there was a huge string of early fails near the end that allowed him to make it through. I'm very glad he did - he's been unfortunate the past couple of years. He was VERY emotional upon getting the news, and Zuri gave him a hug. Once again, Zuri is a truly great host, both on-set and on-screen!

Jackson Twait being eliminated so early was crazy to witness because he had a huge fan club and looked really solid during Qualifying. I'm sure he'll be back (and I hope the Spinning Bridge won't emoticon ).

The experience at taping was really good this year, but I wasn't so much of a fan of the episodes themselves. Seeing them live may actually taint the episode for me, though, seeing as I want to see everything from taping and experience the same thing - which is clearly pretty much impossible to do.

Two reviews to post this week, Cinci first (just a short one):

A very nice episode - almost entirely down to a fast course and of course a high number of clears. Don't have strong feelings for slam dunk - don't hate it but don't love it either. Spinball Wizard is too easy for a ninth obstacle but that was actually a good thing tonight. Highlight of the episode and possibly the season so far was 2 female clears.

A more detailed Vegas review incoming...
