Re: Wipeout is 10

Yeah, they ruined a course that wasn't bad at all!

Having only one course made the series rather repetitive, but they actually weren't too bad at providing some variation (foam/no foam on the Play Pound and the different things on the final obstacle's tilting platforms), at least in the Qualifier. There were only four different starting obstacles over the course of the regular series (and Chopper Blades for the Tournament of Champions), but by then most opening-obstacles all felt the same anyway, so didn't make much difference! emoticon

The main thing had to have been the downer-of-an-ending the Zone ended-up being. I agree that the course had some serious potential, but I do think they would've had to change a couple of things to make it beatable (slightly smaller gap between the two "rotisseries" in The Shredder, smaller jump between horizontal gear and landing platform), but that could've easily been done and made all of the obstacles beatable. And maybe just having the obstacles moving at a slower pace would make them all completely beatable eventually.

Maybe they wanted to get the Zones done quickly so the "skip ahead" rule was just a move done to save time? It did seem like they stopped caring much about viewers' opinions by that point.

It was the plain old classic sweeper in this episode - only thing I have to say is I really don't like the design of the sweeper. The contraption is far too clunky and over designed and distract from the simplicity of the round.

Yeah, they only used the classic version this year. It's sad because anyone who watched both the first and the last season could see the lack of trying just through that one round - season one (and two!) had some awesome ways to mix-up the Sweeper, while season seven just kept it plain every time. That's one place where a tiny bit of extra effort would've gone a looooong way.

And yeah, I agree that they should've brought back the original build of the Sweeper, but I guess the season four version was the one they had laying around so just went with that and saved the effort.

Space Race is one of my favourite rounds from later seasons and with just the one course it alternated between being a Round 2 and Round 3 obstacle.

It was always only a second round (before the TOC episode), alternating with the Sweeper, while the People Beater was the third all season. They changed it for the last episode to be fair to all players - those who had the Sweeper as a second round and those who had the Space Race instead. Since every episode until that point had People Beater, they took it out, seeing as getting rid of it wasn't a disadvantage to anyone in particular.

Speaking of the final Space Race, I liked how they mixed it up with the foam - if only they did those things regularly in later seasons!

I completely agree with you guys, this was a potentially decent series ruined. This whole series screamed Total Wipeout with the repeated obstacles, the same course for the whole season and the move on when you fall rule in the wipeout zone. The wipeout zone had tonnes of potential - all the obstacles were really good but the rules completely spoiled it. They even went one step further than total wipeout, because on that you had to complete the first and last obstacles, it was just the ones in the middle you could skip but on this you could skip them all and that made the wipeout zone so anti-climatic.

You're spot-on about feeling like Total Wipeout (including the change-in-tone of commentary, too).

I think after the first one or two series, they made it so you COULD skip all the Zone obstacles (I know I've seen a ton of competitors climbing a ladder after the Turntables/Sinister Snowflakes in the UK). But yes, this did feel worse because most of us preferred the US version to begin with AND these were new and unseen obstacles (compared to Barrel Run, Spinner, etc. that we'd already seen in America anyway) that were never in a proper Zone.

Random discovery of the day:

I found that the “Bucket Buddy” was a serious invention - while I’ve always assumed it was just a prop to get on the show! I was looking at old Wipeout posts on Instagram and saw @bucketbuddy and instantly recognized the name.

Anyway, it was surreal to see five years later emoticon. Don’t judge me, I had five hours of driving to fill! emoticon

Could that be because you've never watched the show before? emoticon
